I downloaded a few torrents not too long ago, here's everything in them. Let me know if you guys see anything you like, or if Vesp wants to give me an ftp account I can just upload all of it. I've attached Reductions in Organic Chemistry and Oxidations in Organic Chemistry from Hudlicky because they're both nice to have.

At least in the case of the "Chemistry Complete" torrent. I think the "Organic" torrent has some new stuff, though.

If they are essentially image files disguised as PDFs (such as the patent documents from www.google.com/patents) do we need to run them through an OCR program to make them searchable or can we just upload them as is?

OCR is appreciated, but you can upload them as is.

I prefer http://ep.espacenet.com/ to google patents.

I have the same issue on my site where img PDF are only visible thru there names to the search engine ad I would like to expand that if I could.

If books are scanned in image mode, and not OCR mode, then searching for words will fail.

OCRed means that the text is available, for example you can select a line of text or the title and copy it then paste it somewhere else. There are low level scripts search engines use like 'pdftotext' that when called in the code output a text file of the same name as the pdf with the contents of the pdf file (without pics ect), and the search engine can then read the txt and search it. In the search engine I just installed you have to parse the files, and index them in a database for searching. There was a workaround where you could manually create the txt by exporting in nitroPDF or copy the text and pasting into a notepad file. Naming the file for example, "test.pdf" you would export as a txt file called "test_pdf.txt" then add a string replace function like str_replace that swaps all occurances of _pdf.txt with .pdf , so basically allows the full text search of txt but then swaps any _pdf.txt extensions with .pdf . But I do not know how you would swing that with google? It was google you wanted to full text search right, if not it is much easier.

For example you can search at google and bring up results from full text searches at sciencedirect, but google is not searching through their pdfs directly. They would either have the metadata of the pdf stored somewhere on their site probably as txt files but most probably in the html versions of the papers they host, that googles bots can access and index. That could be an option make a html page with the full text in the source of the html, that when viewed in a browser only bring up a link to the paper in question, maybe with the Title and abstract??? Google would then index that (providing it had access) and bring back results for the full text.

yeah to put it bluntly OCR is like having 2 things:
1. a snapshot picture of a text book page (like a jpeg, a flat image)
2. a text version of a text book page (like a word doc, editable text, etc)

with OCR you can take a flattened image and it scans it and uses intelligence to try to determine what letters are present. sometimes OCR sucks and makes major goof-ups and is way off with its interpretations so you end up with a confusing paragraph of text with type-o's and odd symbols. this depends on 2 things: 1) good quality image to the text is clear and 2) a good OCR engine because a lot of OCR engines suck in my experience

Read IRIS doesn't work at all

As was already said, the better the image quality, the better OCR software actually works

Well, I have problems with converting the book "Adsorption Engineering" by Suzuki Motoyuki to translate it for my department :'(. I used Solid Converter but it didn't work.
