Equipment: 3-Pronged Clamps

3-Pronged clamps are used to clamp glassware and apparatus to a ring stand. They are actually more versatile than versatile clamps, in that they can hold any shape and most sizes of glassware and they can turn in any direction.

These clamps actually come in two pieces: a 3-prong clamp and a holder. The holder hooks onto the ring stand and to the clamp itself, and the prongs of the clamp hold the apparatus/glassware.

The organic chemistry teaching labs are down-sizing the size of 3-pronged clamps. In your lab drawer, you will probably have one small and one large 3-pronged clamp, and only one holder. The holder works with either size clamp.

Location: Student lab drawer equipment. You should have 2 3-pronged clamps of different sizes and one holder.

Cost: $20.10. However, since these are not "breakable" in the same manner as is glassware, the management usually assumes that you have lost them rather than broke them, and you are not charged. The management reserves the right to change this policy at any time, so always put them back into your lab drawer at the end of the experiment instead of leaving them attached to the ring stands.
