Ring clamps connect to a ring stand. They come in several sizes and have a multitude of uses: holding a separatory funnel during an extraction, support for a heating mantle or steam bath, supporting a glass funnel in gravity filtration, support for a gauze which in turn holds a beaker or flask.
You can add pieces of cut tygon tubing to the ring to serve as a cushion for separatory funnels. Often tape is wrapped around them for the same reason (note the black ring with yellow tape and the silver ring with Tygon tubing in the photo below). This works well to protect the sep funnel, however, if the ring is later used as support for a heating mantle, the tape/tubing can get so hot from the heating mantle that it can catch on fire. Always find a ring that does not have tape/tubing on it to use as a support for heating mantles.
