I prefer HgI2 ...a friend of mine had very bad yields using Urushibara...

.........the Al/Hg reductions work magnificently but there is the issue of disposal of toxic sludge and exposure. Also work up is a bitch. ........

Workup used to be a real "pain in the ass" until the sludge was dissolved in NaOH and product directly steam distilled from the reaction flask. The alcohol/MeNH2 can be reused and no extraction of the reaction mix is required. No fuss no muss.

BTW Hg element is also easy to recover and reuse with this protocol. Exposure to HgCl2 or Hg metal is simply a matter of taking proper care and one would have to be quite stupid to have any of either in the product.
