Hope you have some big beads of silica gel. Glass beads packing is normally used 4,6 or 8mm depending on the number of theoretical plates needed. The holdup is more with smaller sizes and it will choke easily if distilling too fast .
Silica gel BTW is often used as a catalyst for vapor phase reactions so keep that in mind with whatever mixture you have especially if it may have any metal traces.
A very good and convenient packing is those Stainless steel pot scrubber coil sponge thingies. Stretch it out a little, cut with scissors and don't stuff it in tightly. A long thin skewer stick is helpful to push it in so it stays somewhat elongated.
