I use a combination of os s right now.
win2k as a workstation, I run putty to give me a shell on a local freebsd computer, and I run screen inside that shell so I can maintain sessions on several other remote linux and freebsd machines (screen is awesome btw if you've not tried it). I run different services from a bsd computer on the lan here. This has been working really well.

Running Gentoo Linux on the Main computer and the laptop. All the hardware works can't beat the speed of a nice linux kernel. |

| ah good to see i'm not the only gentoo user here... gentoo in a bit of a mission to get your head around, i've been playing with it for almost 18 months now and i've got it pretty well sussed now. i like gentoo cos i can customise the compiler options, and if i want a program, it's just 'emerge programname' and easy to update too (but lots of traps for young players in that process, that's been my biggest stumbling block). I'm also running a pax-enabled kernel, which has stack smashing protection and memory randomisation and non-executable memory (does mean i can't run java tho, cos it executes data memory). I would be running grsecurity as well but it's hard to configure it for a desktop machine. one of these days i'll get the posix acl's running, imho, probably easier to set up than grsec. grsec is good for servers. I also run a webserver (apache2), ftp server (proftpd), silc server, and use gnome for my desktop (i hates the kde HATESES). |

I run gentoo on my laptop {main box} - in addition to the valid reasons loki pointed out the portage system includes some very handy chemical programs {of course these will also run on any linux box}. It supports all the hardware in my laptop, and every other laptop I've installed it on for that matter {with the exception of some old inbuilt winmodems}. FreeBSD runs all my servers and has never let me down. I have win98 happening inside VMWare for one reason only - Civ2.
No matter what OS you run it won't be secure or safe by default. You need to pay attention and know what you're doing {yes my mail scanners have picked up a *nix virus and lame cracking attempts make my firewall logs enjoyable light reading}. Of course seeing as neither I nor anyone I know would consider doing anything illegal data encryption is merely for research purposes. |
