M.Hcl has very low solubility in IPA, probable same for the sulfate.
But why not just dissolve the freebase in toluene (dried with magnesium sulfate first) and gas it with hydrochloric acid? |

Because it doesn't make the sulfate.. (seriously: gassing needs pure freebase, cacti extractions are seldomly really pure unless several a/b's are part of the procedure)
The sulfate is rather soluble in IPA (contrary to what was expected), and has to be crashed out by adding acetone or ether until a lasting turbidity can be seen, followed by prolonged cooling in the freezer to crystallize all sulfate.
But the advantage is that you can make a pure salt even from rather dirty/impure M.freebase.
Just don't use too much IPA in the beginning, as stated. |

| Ah, sorry. Didn't know we talked about extracted mescaline (maybe I should have read the complete thread). |

| the why not of gassing - cos it takes fancy gear to do gassing and less than fancy gear risks the evil white vapours turning everything steel in sight into a brown crusting wreck. given fancy gear, gassing is loovlee |

Nah.
Creating HCL-gas is easy, and all the gear it requires is a bottle and a rubber hose that can withstand the acid (and something to gas oufcourse). With good ventilation, no problems (and if you don't have good ventilation you shouldn't do any reactions at all). It's the eeeeasy part of any synthesis. |
