Wraith would like to know whether it is safe to order p-methoxyphenol from larger companies. He assumes smaller quantities are not watched but what about, say, 500 g? Also, does anyone have an idea what it is legitimately used for (besides of the manufacture of interesting aldehydes)?

Yes, of course, it is OTC now, thanks to Antoncho, but that product is dark brown. Having to steam distill 10 l of water to get 1-2 mole amts of the aldehyde can last very long. So buying it saves a lot of work.

The other point that is not completely clear, in the methylation of 2-OH-5-MeO-BA with MeI (Me2SO4 is not available to SWIW), which solvent/base system gives the best yield, is DMF preferred over dioxane?

Thanks in advance,
Wraith

I really don't see what your problem is with making p-MeO-phenol synthetically. The product doesn't dissolve well in water, so it can be extracted with for instance DCM, after which the solvent can be evaporated. Try Baeyer-Villiger or Dakin, it's just soooooooo easy.
If you aren't convinced, well, can't give you any good reason... Maybe in photography?

Ave Hive, synthetisandi te salutant!

It is used as an antioxidant, by the way, but there is no way they would believe that. Someone who does not even run a company, does not need  half a kg of it, for stabilising their solvents.
The impurities remain in the DCM.
