I agree with German. That's where I get most of my NaOH and KOH.

just FYI, Lowe's used to sell Roebic brand NaOH but took it off the shelves last year if i remember correctly.  sucks because it was a big container for fairly cheap (in comparison to other OTC places)

If you can't find it at your local store, head out of the city to a smaller town and check out the Ace or True Value.  I bought a bunch of lye in the wilds of NC on a trip last year, sulfuric acid too.  Was funny because I also found a copy of "Comprehensive Guide to the Hazardous Properties fo Chemical Substances" for a dollaron that trip and after I picked up a bunch of high proof Everclear it was a good thing!

You are talking about the ones in solution, right?

No. Solid beads of KOH and flake NaOH.

Drain cleaners have rapidly become a no go, at least in my area. Everything has been reformulated away from the pure product. Then again, I'm surrounded by shake and bake idiots, rolling labs, bottom feeder cooks, and their clientele - which will steal anything useful from the shelves.

Biodiesel and soap suppliers are the way to go. Anyone with a decent budget could afford to pick up a 55lb sack of NaOH and KOH if they never wanted to worry for a long while. These should be relatively pure, as their intended applications would view all of the other additives as the contaminants which they are. I've never run into any problems with the quality from a biodiesel supplier.

A friend has been very satisfied with the quality of the NaOH and KOH from a soap supplier.

The NaOH here appears to be pure, just white prills, never seen flake, never, ever, seen KOH either off the shelf.

The sulfuric on the other hand, is only fit for drying, producing HCl gas etc, acid/base reactions at a real stretch etc, as its purple, bloody purple for fucks sake.
