I was under the impression that there's like a 30% drop using nitromethane as opposed to methylamine.

I think its more of an objective manner... Personaly I had 100% yeild loss when trying nitromethan ;D....Wait no, no smiles >:(

IME yields have always been lower with MeNO2. IMO you can't go wrong just synthing MeNH2 elsewhere and just running a HgX2 amalgam with MeNH2 salt added.

I feel that MeNO2->MeNH2 effervesces out of the solution to such an extent that the yields drop considerably. The reduction heat helps push it.

Quantitive  yields are possible if one makes the methanolic solution of methylamine in advance and separately from the reduction.

Correct chesire, which is why I started my thread on catalytic hydrogenation of nitromethane.  Now where to get a hydrogen tank...
