Ah! That is very cool.
Toxic wasp honey sounds neat...
I'll read about this for sure.

LOL! I absolutely love the fact that the wasp stuff has datura issues/atropine in it!
you've no idea how well that fits me and this little story book I am writing. (A key component is datura and wasps..)

Plus I absolutely love Datura and wasps (always have, no idea as to why) so it is neat they come together in such a situation - or at least that it is possible for such a thing to happen.

A long with the "Give Honey or Sting them!" option for Karma (Now known as Colony Status")... I also added this for kicks and giggles...

Pupae..............................24...............................50
Subordinate Wasp...........27..............................100

Just fun wordplay on ranking -- since ranking literally doesn't matter at all and it is fun to pretend we are wasps! :P I figured it would be good to have the cycles and statuses reflected here as in a real wasp nest. heh

I like what you have done here vesp.

I laughed at the 'give honey vs sting them' idea.
Toxic honey has been used by people before IIRC, such as andromedotoxin-contaminated
honey, is well known to occur, and has been used as a primitive biological weapon,

hxxp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19683834 Can somebody get me this paper? I am curious now. I have heard of toxic honeys before, I always had assumed that the grayanotoxins were sodium channel fuckers, like jellyfish venom or scorpion alpha toxins.....this suggests a cholinergic mechanism. Someone please get me this paper!

hey vesp how about seeing who gives what to whom?   I feel there are some sock puppets around here!

Not that that's neccesarily bad...but some of these ratings just don't make sense!

I agree with some of the ratings but others (for a prime example Methyl Man ) have ONLY got the 1 fresh gave!  go figure?

maybe no one has read any of his posts recently, idk, but maybe some new wasps might think it suggests they arent worthy!

also, are you still considering the wiki vesp or is it too difficult?   It would be SO cool  8)

Recently I was searching for a few old topics and when I did find them I was surprised that sometimes the title of the topic isn't really about what IS being discussed!

This is partially what I was referring to in the "Invite some friends" thread....and the search engine here seems to be a little temperamental with me  :o

If you are seeing inconsistencies in search engine results return to the "home" page of the site and search from there othewise you end up searching within the sub-forum you are currently browsing.

Quoted for emphasis  -- That is very important to do!

I don't feel their are any sock puppets.

People like MethylMan just haven't posted very much SINCE the karma option was enabled - He'll get a bunch of +1 when he posts other things.

-1s can only be given once every hour by any person -- and so far I doubt there is anyone on here "out to get someone" by taking different accounts, or waiting hour after hour to give someone a negative rating.

Its just a way to let people who that their posts are appreciated, or not appreciated.

While other members who might get off topic, and not post useful information tend to get less +1s and more -1s.

This helps other members understand what other members want, what behavior is seen as helpful/good and what other behavior is seen has bad. This will in turn help the member adjust their behavior, if they want to do so, to be more helpful to the community.

so, are you still considering the wiki vesp or is it too difficult?

It is being considered, but I am not working on it by any means -- just thinking about it, and discussing it when it comes up.
It would *probably* be expensive to get started, and would need fund raising of some sort... Since I think it would need specific help with data entry and I doubt anyone would do it for free at an effective rate.

thanx very much...I couldnt figure out what was going on...the bloody thing seemed so temperamental  :P  Finally it all makes sense!

Pardon my ignorance here but what is the basis of these costs?  and  how much do you think they would wasp? (bee  ;D

It would be great for cruising the forum as well as enhance learning AND I think it would make this nest virtually unique in this genre of chemistry 8)

Well, I'd want it to be a wikipedia that had the rhodium archive entered into it, with pictures, etc - so I'd probably have to pay someone to enter the data, references, images, etc to get it going.

I hear that data entry experts (read: college students) can be hired for your local minimum hourly wage, and sometimes less if you offer a cash bid for the entire project.

You can get them MUCH cheaper in other places.
I hired a guy for $15 to enter 54 products into ~10 different marketplaces.
$15 => for ALL the work. (I paid him more in the end since I wanted)

Poor people in Pakistan, India, etc work for much cheaper. Can hire them from Odesk for pretty cheap.

formatting the rhodium archive content (and all of it) seems like it would cost a lot more. I'm just not ready to undertake this project. Someone else could if they want.. but if no one is going to do so I will eventually when I get motivated about it enough but right now I am focusing on my business, bitwasp, and my little stupid manifesto thing.

Perhaps a limit on person to person stings / 'honey givings'? Within a time frame, or that one 'must' explain a sting to the person being stung so they might correct whatever behavior or post deserved it [ currently the 'honey' and stings aren't attributed to a specific post, but accrue in collection ] I don't know if that is even possible, but it sounds like it might work. Or perhaps just leave things as they are.

An autie forum that Toady is a member of has a good karma system.

Positive and negative karma is limited in the amount that can be given per user, to a specific user, to IIRC, 1 per half hour, or possibly per hour. And the giving of a reason for yay/ghey-ing a user is mandatory.

No good just telling somebody they are an oxygen-thieving heap of dog sewage, without telling them WHY they make the perfect poster-child for post-natal abortion. Likewise, no good praising somebee's post, without the chance to learn what makes for a good post, and keep up the good work.

Great place, and hey, alex plank, owner of wrongplanet, and anal-raping post of Jenny McCarthy, sell out ambulant lake of fermented urine, and proud owner of the 'I bend over for autism speaks' tattoo hates the place. Which by definition, makes it probably one of the best forums going ;D

i would like to get some feedback WHY one gets so much bad karma? i cannot see how i for example earned this, somebee please should tell me?
and the same with toady, cannot see why he has so much bad karma, he doesnt tell shit as far as i can tell, its pretty prudent?
this karma system is really not worth anything if theres no feedback, in my opinion its nothing more than those like/share buttons on facialbook or youporn/tube?

Rambling posts are bad.  Hypnos is also a rambler.
Also it is limited per hour?
One user can only give another user bad or good karma once per hour.

It would be better if they could only give out one karma to anyone per hour -- but eh... to much work for something so trivial.

I think for the most part the karma system is accurate - and aids in self awareness and public opinion.
