man A belladonna grows as a weed all over the place down here

they have a soft fruity seed pod IIRC I used to pick them walking to school and throw them at things, they leave a little purple stain

do you know vesp what is the best way to harvest these guys so they remain viable?

also vesp have a look at these http://www.australianseed.com/index.php/cName/protea-and-pincushion they are uniqyuely oz, very hardy and the flowers dry out looking almost the same as hen they are fresh, you can sell them to florists for a healthy profit

Also have you ever considered bamboo's? I spent a few years propagating various clumping bamboos, and 2 types of 'running' bamboo (Phylostachus) the P. Nigra is black and again florist will pay $1 per mt for the stuff which in the right conditions can go beserk

Bamboo looks nice but it will rapidly overgrow a garden in temperate climates and the runners will damage any stonework around... plant with caution or at least select the species v. carefully.

Pots may be best.

bamboo falls out of my area of interest/knowledge and I wouldn't feel safe about investing time and money to try and sell them, you know? I just want to sell the sort of things I would personally buy. The Atropa can be harvested by putting in a bag, smashing them up a bit and adding a bit of water and shaking. This will cause the berry material and seeds to separate. Allow the berries to ferment a bit...

It is a lot like how people collect tomato seeds. http://www.sunset.com/garden/fruits-veggies/harvesting-tomato-seeds-slideshow-00400000012404/

When I collect Bittersweet nightshade I just smash the berries a bit, let them sit for a day or so, and then add water (fill the bag about halfway full of water and seed mix) and then shake it a bunch violently. It seems like the berry stuff dissolves and the seeds can sink into a corner of the bag. When it does this, you can pintch off that section of the bag and poor out the rest of the juice -- and then rinse and dry the seeds.
Sounds a bit much, but it is pretty easy actually. :)

Seeds produced by that plant are 3/4 ton per acre I believe.

That grows wild and I am just going to collect it by some train tracks. :)

Of note-belladonna seeds require soaking before they can be grown as far as I know.

The seeds contain a germination inhibitor IIRC. I have a little belladonna seeds, and I have never managed to get them to germinate. Really damn difficult to do it by planting.

How about lemon balm, Not sure if it produces seeds in the first year, but its easy to grow, and tolerates quite some abuse.I love to add a little balm to lady grey tea, it enhances the flavour with its citrus, lemony taste, and its full of antioxidants. Also it has a calming, sedating effect when a strong tea is brewed. IIRC some of the actives, such as rosmarinic acid, have GABA transaminase inhibiting effects. Good for the memory also. IIRC something in there acts on nicotinic ACh receptors.

Vesp if you consider growing atropa belladonna you should definitely try to get your hands on the variety called lutea! Her berries are yellow instead black and when they rot in autumn still on the plant it will smell delicious! ;D
Her seeds are also a lot more expensive than the black variety is, so the commercial aspect will be also satisfied  ;)
Atropine content should also be at least the same toxicity... because her berries are said to be very delicious, the garden company who sells them strongly advises not to plant it into reach of children ;D

Edit: If you cant get them to germinate, sow them in autumn or if it will get not cold enough where you live then put them in the freezer at least 4-6 weeks, they need it its called stratification.
BUT! i have read to put them in alcohol(they say denatured ethanol is just fine) for about one minute and afterwars proper washing will also have the same effect...
Think it implicates that there is that growth inhibitor Tsathoggua mentioned in there existing and it is an alcohol soluble one, pretty interesting i would say!
