Check patent nº 4473713, if it realy works you can put vanillin, water, sodium acetate and optionaly acetic acid and/or methanol inside a pressure vessel (for example a CO2 fire extinguiser) and heat the hell out of it (250ºC) to get protocatechuic aldehyde. Too good to be true?

If anyone is actually interested in working with Eugenol, you need to substitute on the hydroxy to prevent polymerization during synthesis, tnen at whatever stage you wish, when the termoinal side chain is eliminated, deprotect and methylate the ring.
