I recently stumbled across reference to a book called "Hydroponic Heroin" but I can't seem to find a pdf online, and I'd rather not purchase a book with that name. If anyone has a link to it online or a pdf copy, I'd greatly appreciate it! I'm giving poppy growing another try this season: inside, outside unattended, and outside in a garden. Fingers crossed for a three-way tie of success!

yo vent check out the "poppy tea" thread--that'll set you in the right direction--the dose is something you've just gotta work out,,depends on the strenghth of the ppoppies and your 'tolerance' for the same :P--tis a personal thing ;)

I've compiled a huge list of journal articles I don't have access to, but either have promising names or abstracts. Sorry if this is a bit of a mess, but I thought some of the titles for these papers might be of use to people trying to grow poppies. Also, I'm aware that there is a thread for article requests and translations, but because of the specific nature for all of these articles, I thought it'd be appropriate to post it here.

Effects of maturity and plant spacing on the morphine content of two varieties of Papaver somniferum L.
Tookey, HL; Spencer, GF; Grove, MD; Duke, JA
Bulletin on Narcotics (USA), vol. 27, (Oct-Dec), pp. 49-57, 1975
Two varieties of opium poppy were grown under irrigation for one season and their capsules analyzed for morphine content by gas chromatography. Harvest of the capsules at 29-33 days after flowering (mature seed) gave 6.70 kg/ha morphine as compared to 5.36 kg/ha morphine in capsules harvested at 4-6 days after flowering. With constant row spacing (30 cm between double rows on ridges 102 cm apart), a plant spacing of 6 cm gave 20% more morphine than either 12- or 18-cm spacing. There was no statistical difference in morphine content between a blue and a white seeded variety.

Responses of poppy, Papaver somniferum, to photoperiod
Gentner, WA; Taylorson, RB; Borthwick, HA
Bulletin on Narcotics (USA), vol. 27, (Apr-Jun), pp. 23-31, 1975
The effect of light on the flowering of poppy plant was studied. Flowering is induced by 2 or more long photoperiods or by a single period of light longer than 24 hr. Flowering stems always lengthen, but stems also sometimes lengthen in the absence of flowering, e.g. with the application of gibberellic acid. Flowering was not controlled by brief red irradiations, far red irradiations, or both. Thus, the action of phytochrome was not shown, but its presence was not excluded. Light seems to control poppy flowering through a so-called high energy reaction

Mineral nutrition of Papaver somniferum L. III. Effect of nitrogen and phosphorus
Felklova, M
Ceska a Slovenska Farmacie (Czechoslovakia), vol. 21, (Oct), pp. 341-347, 1972
The effects of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizerson the morphine and oil contents and seed yield, of 3 varieties of Papaver somniferum were studied for 4 years. Different times of application of the fertilizers had different effects on seed yield, and on alkaloid and oil content.

Cultivation of medicinal poppy species
Boehm, H
Planta Medica (Germany), vol. 19, (Nov), pp. 93-109, 1970

Mineral nutrition of Papaver somniferum L. IV. Effect of nitrates and ammonium salts
Felklova, M
Ceska a Slovenska Farmacie (Czechoslovakia), vol. 21, (9), pp. 405-410, 1972
The effect of ammonium and nitrate nitrogen on the content of morphine, oil and the seed yield was studied in Papaver somniferum. Single doses enhanced the yield of seeds, repeated doses in different phases of the growth and development could not be utilized satisfactorily owing to the slower activity. Doses applied at the beginning of vegetation brought good results in the morphine and oil content. Ammonium nitrogen, combined with superphosphate, was effective before sowing only. Application of ammonium nitrate brought about a lower content of seeds in capsules, higher doses increased the morphine and oil content. Doses given before sowing and in the phase of the rosette formation were utilized most effectively.

You can't tell in the pic, but what I did next is give them a very generous misting w/ a water bottle...

Then I poured a little water in the collecting tray, covered w/ the clear plastic tray for mini green house effect (after I cleaned it off from doing the soil mixture), and placed them in my growing area...

Everyday I've been misting at least once. And now that the seeds have sprouted I am removing the clear plastic tray from the top. Also, I fill the collecting tray w/ fertilized water once a day. I use 1 teaspoon of the stuff in the pic below and mix it w/ 1 gallon of water.

I'm new here, which you probably already new since this is my first post.  So I thought I'd share...."

Thanx again! We LOVE good sharing and new ideas muchly ;D,,I have NO DOUBT you will find amongst the 3 gigs (and growing!) of data here, much high quality information!!!!

OoBYCoO, nice start matey, keep up the "smarta data" as you've already done!!! 8)

P.s.  Poppies love "sandy, loamy, friable well drained soils..."cold shock"-a night in the fridge, has been known to help the little buggers to germinate :-\...but most definitely,,..check out the 'other' threads that talk about poppies..e.g.

   1)   australian poppy seeed estimated to contain 200 mcg./gram morphine

   2)     What are you growing this year?

use the sites search engine, there's some good stuff hiding about!!!

I'm going to have to thin them out soon. :-[
Also, they might start develop mold due to the moisture.  I combat this w/ what you see in the pic.  I noticed it most on the outside of the pots so I just sprayed each one of them down w/ this stuff and let the excess collect in the tray to be reabsorbed later.
