Here is the preparation of tryptamine from this French article I didn't want
to type all the way. They also reacted N-methylaziridine with
phenylmagnesium bromide which yielded N-methylphenethylamine in 4% yield.
Someone please translate it.
Sur l'emploi d'une beta-aminoéthylation dans la préparation de la
tryptamine, Bull. Soc. Chim. France, p. 1190-1 (1961):
Tryptamine
A la solution éthérée de 15,6 g (0,13 mole) de bromure de méthyl-magnésium,
on ajoute une solution de 15,3 g d'indole (0,13 mole) dans le même solvant,
puis 5,6 g d'éthylène-imine en xylène anhydre. On élimine complètement
l'éther en distillant et en ajoutant du xylène puis on maintient au reflux
jusqu'à prise en masse. On décompose par l'eau, à froid, acidifie jusqu'à
pH 1 par HCl concentré et sépare le chlorhydrate de tryptamine dont on
libère la base par la soude aquese. Rdt = 9,6 g (46%). F = 116'

small amt. of 1-(2-aminoethyl)indole, b0.75 125-6.degree.; hydrochloride m.
213-16.degree.. Similarly was prepd. 2-methyltryptamine, m. 107.degree.
(picrate m. 218.degree.) from 2-methylindole.
