I found two methods for making sodiumazide at the omikron chem digest.

One is melting NaNO3 and sodiumamide together at 175 °C

NaNO3 + 3 NaNH2 = NaN3 + 3 NaOH + NH3

the other is streaming N2O over sodiumamide at 180°C

NaNH2 + N2O => NaN3 + H2O

Has anybody tryed this or knows more details?

The first sounds good! Has somebody a recipe for it?

I got a job at a physical chemistry lab on the university, where I learn. I have found some (20-30g) NaN3 there. Have you got an interesting experiment to do with it? I don't want to waste it with making metallic azides. Tell me something else!

Add it to sulfuric acid and make hydrogen azide gas. As toxic as hydrogen cyanide, and highly explosive. Liquify and detonate.

Yes I have read about Hydrogen Azide it sounds really dangerous though. I think it is almost as powerful as PETN?
It has the advantage of being deadly even if it has failed to detonate! But it's a bit too nasty for my liking.
