For example in US pat 6,015,898 they use sulfonic acid resin for making HNIW in less strong conditions.
Additional but not so interesting info about nitration with RSO2OH using see at 3,965,200; 3,976,704; 4,112,006; 4,234,470; and 5,162,572.
...I want to try RSO2OH for redusing temperature in parafine nitration with weak HNO3.
But making sulfonic ione exchange resin at home not so easy. Using aromatic sulfonic acids has disadvantages: in some conditions it can exchange -SO2OH group on -NO2. Also some bad reactions with substrate isomerisation possible.
I think most interesting must be compounds like methanesulfonic acid for its strong R-S tie.(CH3SO2OH yellow liquid. m.p 20C. Can mix but non soluble in water. May be possible to obtain from water mixture by freezing)
Most interesting way to make it: 1. R-X + NaSCN => R-SCN + NaX (X=halogen) 2. R-SCN + 13HNO3 => CH3SO2OH + CO2 + 14NO2 + 6H2O (second reaction may be directly in nitration mix http://theforum.virtualave.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif How about using dicloroethane in this reaction... Another simple reaction R-X + Na2SO3 => RSO2ONa + NaCl
Is HSO3CH2CH2SO3H chemicaly stable?
Original way discribe in 6,207,025. But how to make it at home laboratory (aka kitchen http://theforum.virtualave.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif !?
Do you know something interesting about using alkylsulfonic acid catalysts in nitration processes?
