Right, I've finally uploaded the Wide Boys Tool Book. If someone has a better connection than I - could you please upload it to the FTP. I don't know how long these files will be online, it depends how many people leech the files.

Here is where the files are located - http://www.anycities.com/user/thestoic/twtb.html

Enjoy! :)

Links do not all work.
i try and save them and they all drop after dopwnloading only about 12kb of everything past the first Zip.. I have tried about 2o times allready and have come ot the idea that their must be a error some where.. Was anyone else successful in downloading all the links? I would be interested in getting a copy..

Try Camoflauge[sp?] it is a program that maskes files as Jpegs.. or just simply change the extention to Jpg. and host them at a free picture site?

Sounds as a solid idea.. well anyways best of luck to you.. and Godspeed to Ctrl_C.

It's on the FTP now, so once it's been moved over to recent, you should be able to download it.

Concerning the access to the FTP, how can I get it? I sent a mail to Ctrl_C but he doesn't seem to be here very often and didn't answer my email.

How did you, recent users, get an account ?

Hmm, feels good to be back. Haven't been here for a while with finals and downtime. Anyway, on the point, I applied for an FTP account nearly 2 months ago. I didn't receive any reply whatsoever. Neither a rejection nor an acceptance. Does this mean I got rejected or does it mean that my request was lost and I should apply again?

On a side note, does anybody have the Rosetta Stone Japanese edition software?

Thanks.

Arthis- Ctrl_C has been busy, so if you dont here from him, it doesnt necessarily mean you have been rejected. Here (http://www.roguesci.org/forms/ctrlcftpapp.html) is the link to the page you need.

Photonic- Welcome back. Just use the same link as in the above message. Ctrl_C has said he'll be busy for the next while, so just try every once in a while. Eventually, you'll either get an acceptance or a refusal.

working on it. I did another HD format and win install, however, I lost some important files needed for servu. For one, they have the software key, and secondly, they have the 130 user accounts and passwords in them. Darkdontay has a copy of these files but when I emailed darkdontay@yahoo.com last night, it bounced back saying it no longer existed. Anybody have any ideas?

If I can't get the files, we may have to re-do all the accounts, which actually isn't a bad thing as a lot of them are inactive.

To apply for one, go here: http://www.roguesci.org/forms/ctrlcftpapp.html

Sorry for the inconvenience to everybody but this is also the best way I know to clean out inactive accounts.

In a topic, you click on your profile, and the link is something like that:

Mr. Cool,

You can't find a copy of CuteFTP on Kazaa or Grokster? I serached and found fifty two copies on there..or are you just afraid of getting a copy from a file-sharing service with a virus with it? Oh, and I sent Ctrl_C a letter asking for FTP access (I know I don't have fifty posts yet, but I'm fairly close, and I was able to point out at least three good posts in the letter, plus some other contributions I'd made), and he hasn't replied in the negative or affirmative. I would have just used the standard "FTP access" application form but my letter was somewhat long and complicated; however, if Ctrl_C wants me to use the form instead, I will.

Good news: I soon gonna have ADSL for fast internet connnection. I may have some good info that I cannot upload right now (56k is pretty low).

I'd like to be of some use with the FTP, the problem is I have to wait my better internet connection, and even then I need a few more Linux knowledge. (I better not make a WinXP ftp...). With a high connection I may help Ctrl_C though... I'll tell him when I have it.

I know longer have the files and the CD's and everything else is being held hostage he has no idea whats on them and will never touch them he uses the computer like once a month to load it with porn and virii.

I'm on a cable modem here and I have a 20gig larger drive so if I can get Ctrl_c to send me the new stuff I can host it from here plus though I must mention I no onger have the DVD burner though I will be buyinh one in the coming time when I get my visa.

How could you be so careless?!

You were entrusted with those files so in case anything happended to the main FTP, that we wouldn't have lost everything...and you go and lose everything when the FTP is gone!

And you can bet your ass that either your ex-roomie, or one of his friends, will find all those "terrorist" files...then call the police...you get a visit from guys in cheap suits and badges with three letters on them...arrest, possible trial, destruction of your life...all kinds of bad things that happen now to people who have literally thousands of files about weapons and explosives on their computer in the post 9/11 era.

So you'll be paying for your mistake, karma willing. Hopefully you dont' take the rest of us down with you in the process.

Perhaps you'd be better off stealing back your computer, and immediately removing the drive and copying off the files, prior to wiping it and selling it.

In the meantime, since you no longer have the backup system, I've removed that from your sig line.

All forumites should store their complete forum stuff within real-time encrypted containers
(created by programs like BestCrypt (http://www.jetico.com) or PGPDisk).
Operating systems handle mounted containers as additional partitions.
If you don't have the correct password or know a back door (as there is one in "Scramdisk" ;))
an unmounted container just looks like a huge piece of data garbage.

Well I would suggest you get chopping on getting those discs back ASAP. The primary has been down a while, haven't heard from _c in awhile, and who knows what's going on with the FTP. :(

I don't know how things are in your state, but where I'm from, it's illegal for someone to hold your property hostage, unless it's an item in for repairs or collateral on a loan, pending payment for any debt.

In other words, your roomie can't legally hold your shit hostage, regardless of how much you owe. If he has a debt claim, he has to take you to court to get a legal judgement against you for it, which is known as a "lein". If you're going to steal your stuff back, be sure to keep it somewhere where it can't be connected to you for a few weeks afterwards, in case he calls the cops, because it'd be illegal for you to steal your shit back if you had to commit burglary to do so. Two wrongs and all that...

If darkdontay could get his Cd's back there should be a copy of all the passwords on it - Of course I could be wrong - I was under the impression that you had a full backup of the FTP tho.
Im itching to get back into the FTP tho - finally got a good connection and can download as much as I want...

Hey problem it seems that Darkdontay has lost the whole stuff, read a bit higher in the page, NBK was angry, etc. I fear you cannot but wait for Ctrl_C to gete back.
btw when was your last connection ? Because accounts had been reopened a while ago.

Still waiting on the files.. but I have the option of runing the server if I can get it going.. I will play around alittle bit today and then see about having members dump back the files.. though I will have to figure the passwords out later as I no longer have access tot he pass words to manual enter them.

fear not for I am alive and well. changes are afoot. I will soon no longer be able to host the FTP and my recent neglect has shown exactly that. Sometime around Aug 19-20, I will be moving from my hometown in PA, all the way to New Mexico in order to attend school there (I think I mentioned New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and their Energetic Materials Research Training Center a few times). I will be taking my computer, however the dorms don't offer anywhere near the bandwidth to host.

The only option to continue this now vast amount of knowledge is to pass it onto somebody else who can put in the time and effort that I no longer can. I do have a package containing a 60GB HD w/ almost all FTP contents, cd-r backups of it, as well as cracked serv-u files. This is everything needed to run it should one desire.

Currently the package is addressed to darkdontay, ready to ship. However, darkdontay and I have not been in communication recently but I do see he still browses the forum, as do I as a lurker now.

darkdontay: if you still feel up to the challenge, let me know right here and I will do everything I possibly can to help.

The bottom line is, I will hand the HD over to whoever feels they can best run it. darkdontay and I spoke on the phone earlier and he certainly could if he chose to. However if any other members feel that they could also run it, please let me know here. Experience in FTP would help a lot.

I will try to be in communication more until I leave so we can settle things and hopefully make a successful change of ownership. The rest of the accounts will be entered and the library will be up here until I move.

EDIT: I just set up something like 40 accounts and there are 11 to go but I will have to read up on their references. I have discovered the online application form is broken, which I will resolve with mega hopefully tomorrow.

Note: I may be leaving for SC tomorrow but it will only be for 3 days.

Given Darkdontay's past of losing all of his FTP files ( ), I would have to say that sending everything (HDD and CD's) to him would be a very bad idea. Rather, send the HDD to him, along with the FTP server software, but send the CD's to either Mega or me.

We can copy the CD's, send DD the copies, and we'll still have the original discs so that, if he loses the FTP files (again...RTPB "Plan for failure"), we (the Forum) will still have everything safely archived with one of the admins, to be sent to someone else, so that all is not lost. This is the old "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" RTPB. ;) :D

DD can make CD archives of all the new files that get uploaded, and send copies to whichever admin has the FTP archive copy, so that any restoration is complete, rather than forced to rebuild from the last time you archived it.

Hopefully you'll come back in a few years with a whole buttload of new and interesting files when you graduate from EMRTC. :D

I don't have any recent totals but just over the past few months when there were only 20 or so accounts (now 60) heres what I transferred:

May 2003: 5.77 GB upload and download
June : 7.58
July : 7.21

So figure at least 3 times that for 60 accounts.

Keep in mind this is the FTP traffic and my personal browsing/d'ling including mass amounts of pr0n. Now that we are chugging along again at a steady 65kbps, my bandwidth program should be able to extrapolate monthly bandwidth usage in a few days, provided the traffic stays up which I think it will.

Arthis
July 9th, 2003, 01:52 PM
You may just encounter problems with the password. Some configurations give the same error message if the username or/and the password are wrong. It's used to avoid login scans on systems, it helps preventing hacks.

Arthis is right. I had exactly the same problem when I first got access. Just keep trying, and give Ctrl_C a little time. Hes only been back for a day or so, and he is also in the process of packing and getting ready to move out.

Also, make sure your not putting your password in wrong! I misspelled mine like a dozen times before I got it right!:p Sometimes what looks like one letter or number, could really be a different one.

Good luck, I hope you get it fixed.

I have:

Just over 100 videos of NATO bombings in jugoslavia, FLIR videos. -->330mb

About 220 videos of high power rocketry, some really nice ones, onboard cameras and such. -->1,1 GB

About 1000 pictures of high power rocketry.---> 140mb

I also have about 1700 pictures of pyro, explosives, weapons and such, -->210mb. Many of them has been collected here on the forum and on memebers websítes so you may recognize many of them, most of them are however taken from various pagen on the net.

I can't give any credits at all to these pics and vids since many of them was saved up to 2 years ago.

If any of this would be of any interest let me know and I'll up them.

Alright everyone, I have been working for the last several hours to set up a repilca of Ctrl_C's FTP. However, I need someone to test it for me, and see if its working. (there are still some bugs I may need to work out... Ill contact you tommorrow about them Ctrl_C)

Anyways, all logins are the same, however, the new IP address is-

64.21.166.2

and I am trying to set it up using dynamic DNS, so it may take a bit to get those kinks out, but the IP name is-

If someone could take a few minutes and test things out and let me know whats going on here, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have run a FTP server before, and when I get Broadband soon, I might give it a go.

I am trying to get as much off the FTP as I can while it still exists, and while I know I won't get everything, I know I'll get a fair bit. If anyone can post me CD's, I can copy them for other members in Australia. In fact, if anyone in Aus has much stuff, especially the larger files, then it would be greatly appreciated. FragmentedSanity, you still got those CD's ?

DBSP, they're certainly of interest to me, please upload them. Maybe a zip or rar of each section would be good, saves downloading individual files.

Chemwarrior, I tried yours, both addresses, no luck with my current login.

Anyway, I am happy to distribute things in Australia before (or if I don't get) broadband set up. I have quite a lot at the moment, from the last time it was up, I'm trying to catagorise everything into the original folders. I hope to form as much of a backup as I can, for my own use, but also because I hope to get it to a few more people.

How many CD's is it total for the full FTP ?

Also, I was disconnected a few times yesterday, I assume the power failures are over now ?

Bander
July 11th, 2003, 06:23 PM
As of 4:27pm CST I cannot login using the L/P combo that works as of this moment on Ctrl_C's server. The account is there, but it says the passwords is incorrect.

Also, the 192.168.*.* IP range is for internal LAN addresses, a private IP range, and thus is not the external IP of the FTP server. It's just your internal IP. If on windows, try going to the command prompt and typing 'ipconfig /all' to see all network connetions. You'll probably see one with this (64.21.166.2) IP address. That is your external internet (as opposed to intranet) IP.

chemwarrior
July 11th, 2003, 07:52 PM
Alright, I did that and here's what it came back with-

IP Address- 192.168.0.101
Subnet Mask- 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway- 192.168.0.1

My problem is though that I am trying to work with a dynamic IP. Im trying to get the damn DNS option to work with the Serv-U programs Ctrl_C sent me.. Its being a pain in the ass though...

And sry for all the confusion, its just the other FTP servers Ive used just were kind enough to give you your IP right off the bat.. On Serv-U its quite different.

Thanks for the info though Bander

EDIT- I tested it with my computer, so this should work... Im wondering why it didnt for others...

192.168.0.101

Bander

IP address mixup trivialities aside, the problem seems to be at the authentication phase and not the connection in itself. From the looks of your setup you seem to be connected to a DHCP serving router of some sort, probably a NAT setup. This NAT setup may be the problem, causing a problem with the authentication routine, blocking cleartext passwords or something of the sort?If you have access to the router or gateway in question you might try port forwarding any connections on port 21 directly to 192.168.0.100...if you are the only computer on the network and assured to have this IP assaigned.

But, I'm just guessing from what little information I've been able to glean trying to connect and your ipconfig dump. It could just be servu misconfiguration.

Here's what I get when I try to connect:

STATUS:> Getting listing ""...
STATUS:> Resolving host name ftp.roguesci.org...
STATUS:> Host name ftp.roguesci.org resolved: ip = 64.21.166.2.
STATUS:> Connecting to ftp server ftp.roguesci.org:21 (ip = 64.21.166.2)...
STATUS:> Socket connected. Waiting for welcome message...

STATUS:> Connected. Authenticating...
COMMAND:> USER censored
331 Password required for censored.
COMMAND:> PASS *c*e*n*s*o*r*e*d*
530 Login incorrect.

Occam's razor is always with us, I'd go over your ServU FTP configuration and make sure all the l/ps are correct.

I would encourage everyone who wants to to open up their own FTP because this will allow the most efficient flow of information and traffic. I will work with anyone who wants to use a form like I made for Ctrl_C to screen applicants. You will of course be able to set your own criteria for who you want at your site, I’ll just make the form. The email address the form goes to is hidden, there is no way to reveal it so privacy is assured with the form.

I'll soon get a DSL connection, but my supplier forbids hosting websites or ftp accounts. As I doubt it to check, I think I'll propose a small ftp server to help the Forum. By the way, this will allow me to host my own website ! :)

A question before to start dreaming: the connection resets every 12 hours, so how will I be able to give users an IP ?

What could be interesting would be to set a dedicated server for pictures, films, etc., another for warez, if several persons are interested in opening their own server.

chemwarrior
July 13th, 2003, 05:39 PM
Well, for starters, you can use a DNS account. It will allow you to set something like what I have for mine- @ftp.roguesci.org and when someone connects using that, they will automatically be sent to your IP.

Also, I have all but the 6 largest files downloaded from Ctrl_C's FTP, and those will be done by sometime tommorrow. Therefore, hopefully by wednesday I will have a complete recreation of his FTP, which means I wont have to reissue passwords, logins, etc. Him and me will be in contact soon, and he is going to walk me through the few things Im screwing up on with Serv-U. Once we get that done, as I said, hopefully by wednesday, I will make a post here and let everyone know whats going on.

Arthis, your ftp would be useful for hosting forum media, etc since if it gets shut down then we don't lose essential data. this will give chemworrior more space for long term data.

chemwarrior
July 13th, 2003, 10:02 PM
I like the idea Kingspaz. Arthis, we could use your FTP for things such as Hosted Images, as well as if you were interested in setting up an account for movies and such. As is, Ive got all but the 3 largest files now, but Im running low on space on my HDD, but I will be purchasing a new one in the next few weeks. 120gigs sounds big enough to last quite a while, doesnt it? As of right now, not including the Recent folder, there is roughly only 18gigs worth of data. Once I have the new HDD, I dont believe there will be a size issue, at least not for the next several years...:D

Also, I plan on setting things up so that if the admin/ mods want to help with moving things from uploads to recent, they will be able to. I may also set it up so that some of them will have the ability to move the files from Recent, to their respected folders.

Any questions, comments, or suggestions?

EDIT- I thought I would mention that there will be roughly 5gigs still open on my computer once everything is downloaded from Ctrl_C's FTP. However, I may be able to free up some space by backing up my music files and such to DVD.

I don't have Broadband, and now I may not for a while, but I have a few hosting accounts and such set up, and I was wondering what I could do.

Would people mind if I hosted some publically avaliable files ?

As long as the owner agreed that they could be distributed, that would be fine right ? Copies of "real" manuals, so that people publically have a resource for the KIPE type books. I notice that these, as well as NBK's pdf, and the makeshift arsenal are requested every now and again.

They would be great for beginners, and publically, could draw more people to the forum, which may or may not be a good thing. I just think that even those who don't have the posts and time here to gain FTP access, should be able to get a hold of these books so that they can learn a bit.

I have someone offering me 30Mb of ISP space at the moment, that would be a good start. Also, I know a few manuals could be made avaliable on Kazaa type networks, with links back to the forum. I'm thinking of selected publications only, obviously I don't want everyone getting the good stuff.

As long as everyone agrees, and it doesn't get in anyone's way. It may also lower the bandwidth on the FTP('s)

Any problems with that ? Or any improvements ? At the moment it's the best I can do to help.

What Im asking is if anyone knows of a brand/ model that is better than the rest, as well as what it will probably run me.

@ knowledgehungry-
You have an e-mail.

Also, Ive decided to invest in a small server instead of new HDD at this time. I already have a small HDD that I can add, its only 20gigs, but should last for a while. Also, if I have to leave for some reason, for college in a few years, the server will be sent to Mega who can then decided what will be done with it. Since it will be property of the Forum, any suggestions as to specs for it are appreciated. I will not be able to purchase it for a while, as right now Im without work, but it will be within the next year. Im not too expectant that the FTP is going to double in size over the time, but if it does before I can purchase the server, I will instead buy a larger HDD, and then being saving towards the server.

One thing- Does anyone have any software that can allow your CD drive to be ran as a virtual HDD? Since I have a CD-DVD burner, I will be able to make it so some files are stored there to increase FTP space if necessary.

Also, if someone is interested in hosting a small FTP for things such as Hosted Images, or PGP keys, contact me.

On a side note, the current size of the FTP is 19.7gigs. That does not include the uploads folder. But it does include Recent, which I will begin to move to the appropriate folders shortly.

Edit- Thanks for the link Spud. I may be able to afford after all.

Lucky.. haha.. Windows XP is the only operating system with a built-in udf driver (udfs.sys).

This udf (universal disk format) has been developed for rewritable optical media.
The udf driver maps the sectors of the optical disks to the well-known DOS sectors with
512 bytes, so that the OS can handle the optical media like a hard disk or diskette.

If you get any problems with the microsoft utility, try an optimized external driver
like PACKET CD or similar. Drivers from third party developers are usually better than
these from Microsoft.

I worked it out eventually, so it's ok. I have had troubles with SmartFTP freezing if I select mutiple files. Now, I just select all in a folder, and "copy URL" which automatically opens Download Accelorator, and I can direct all those folder to the correct folders on my HDD.

Problem solved. It is going to take a while to download everything though. Is anyone in Aus willing to send me some of the larger files on cd ? I'm still looking for most of my older backups.

Thanks again.

Just use a service like DynDNS or dtDNS which assign you a static address like theforum.dtdns.net. Applications like Dynsite (http://noeld.com/dldynsite.htm) can update this address automatically when your IP changes.

Ive already looked into those... but its not that thats really the problem. its configureing the FTP to run off it that is. Im working on trying to figure out 2 differnt server programs, to see which works the best... and both are being a pain in the ass for me...

But thanks for the link.. I may see about using their service since its better than others Ive looked at or have.

I wonder if you are still interested in free FTP ? I'm currently administrator of the biggest pyrotechnics and explosive forum in Poland and I could use one of my servers. There is about 180GB of disk space and we have two connections there 1160Kbit and 384Kbit. Hope this would be enough. I can put there all books I've already collected. From my point it would be very convinient to allow the access in hours between 00:00 and 7:00 in our time (GMT +1) or at least decrease the bandwidth during rest hours (these are SDSL connections, not ADSL).

Poland has pyro forum? Wow...what's the URL?

Hey, if you've got the space, more power to you. The more copies that are out there, the more reliable the availability of the information, as well as redundancy against police shut-down, and the less bandwidth demands on any one site. :)

'Course, you'd have to synchronize files occassionally between each other, so that each FTP has all the files that the other does. It's inevitable that people will upload more to one than the other.

HNIW, we would all be very glad to have a more stable FTP. I'm sure you can get an account with Ctrl_C and start moving files straight away if you are willing. Not sure how avaliable Ctrl_C is at the moment of course.

Check this out

217.113.232.79

user pyro
passwd borehole

This is made on slower connection that could be available 24h but it is made on Cable TV connection so not very reliable. There are 2 books, check if download is ok? I have to know who is responsible for accounts. I would rather avoid giving full access to all visitors of the forum.

Tomorrow I will preapare routing for faster connection so one could compare download. But I will have to decrease bandwidth from 6:00 up to 00:00 in GMT time so in US it shouldn't be a problem.

Well it worked, although it was kind of slow. The books downloaded nicely with a speed of 5KB/s.

I didn't mind the slowness as I have ADSL connection, but for those with dial-up it might pose some trouble.

But in general it worked ok.:)

Anyway dial-up connections won't be able to download faster than 5ko, as an average.
As long as there aren't too many simultaneous connections...

I didn't mean to put there staff only in polish. Although I have around 20 books in Polish but there are in form o graphic pictures (djvu, pdf, jpg, tiff etc.) that means they cannot be translated using computer dictionary. I have very usefull book about shaped charges, that could be very intresting because I couldn't find equivalent in english. Such books like urbanski are very popular, I think that fedoroff is much better. I can of course share polish books but I dubt if anyone would understand anything.
I think that the best solution would be to create at least 3 FTP servers with the same passwords and usernames. Servers can easilly mirror each other using for instance wget in linux. If any server is down, one could use another from the list. What is more, we could make some load balancing using DNS.

Back from short holidays :)
I've put some polish books on ftp, that you can find quite interesting.
1. Study on detonation parameters of ammonium nitrate explosives containing alluminium dust.
2. Shaped charges in the army, mining and industry. (very interesting)
3. Third part of Artillery manual (information about explosives, inner balistics).
4. Basics of explosives chemistry.
5. Introduction to explosives technology.

All books are in djvu format (outstanding compression).
The only problem is that these books are in form of pictures so it is impossible to use massive translating.
I have only scripts from Military University of Technology in form of word files but I will put them maybe later.

Rhadon
September 3rd, 2003, 11:24 AM
HNIW, I don't know if you made these DJVU books yourself, but do you (or does anyone else) have a program which can be used to create DJVU files with the OCRed text underneath the images? That would be a wonderful thing to have!

HNIW
September 3rd, 2003, 12:39 PM
Djvu is a picture format, not text. The only possible solution is to use text recognition software, for instance Recognita. But I'm not sure whether djvu compression will not disturb text recognition.
I have other books in form of jpg, tif and tga formats, maybe they occure to be better?
While scanning books it would take to long to use OCR software on each site (my friends are scanning books), especially that we don't need it in form of text.
I have fourth part of Urbanski in english but in paper form :( Three other parts are in polish and I have them in form of pictures (JPG format).

Rhadon

Djvu is a picture format, not text. I was told that DJVU could also store text but don't have the time to verify that now.

While scanning books it would take to long to use OCR software on each site (my friends are scanning books), especially that we don't need it in form of text. But if you use OCR the document will be searchable which is a great advantage. And it doesn't take long either because you don't have to proof-read the text if you don't want to. The user will only see the scanned images anyway, the text which is underneath them is only there for searching as well as copy & paste :).

nbk2000
September 3rd, 2003, 06:58 PM
Ah, but if the text isn't proof-read, than the search is pointless, since the misreading of just one letter in the word by the OCR makes it "invisible" to the search engine. Especially when dealing with old books with weird type faces, the text is just a bunch of gibberish that just adds to the file size without adding any value.

That's why I proofread every page of the books that I'm scanning. Yes, it takes a long time, but I'm going for quality, not quantity, for my DVD. :)

HNIW
September 3rd, 2003, 08:19 PM
I think that it is a waste of time to user OCR on every page. The only reason for doing that is that some people may not understand your language. I'd rather collect books in paper beacuse it is easier for me to read them. Of course, one can print every book, but printing 10 parts of Fedoroff would be a suicide, especially on ink printer ;)
As soon as someone tell me how to organize passwords on FTP server, I put more books.

nbk2000:
Ah, but if the text isn't proof-read, than the search is pointless, since the misreading of just one letter in the word by the OCR makes it "invisible" to the search engine. What you say is true in some way, but the recognition level of programs like FineReader is so high that searching my books has always given me best results. Proof-reading them would be better without a doubt, but I just do not have the time to do so and non-proof-read books are still much better than none :).

HNIW:
I think that it is a waste of time to user OCR on every page. The only reason for doing that is that some people may not understand your language. I don't think so because the ability to search your books enables to search all your books for specific word in a matter of seconds (if you've got a program like Deductus, which is very good by the way). Otherwise, you'll have to open each book by hand and do the annoying work by yourself. The latter method is a safer way to find what you want, but if the automatic search doesn't yield satisfying results you could still do that, right?

When you scan a book, including the non-proof-read OCRed text does not have any drawbacks, so why not just do it for those who might find it useful. But everyone who scannes a book should decide this for himself, and I'll stick to including the OCRed text .

I'm using finereader too, and it's not all that accurate, especially with anything less than perfect scanning technique and pristine original copy with very clear fonts. It especially has a problem with distinguishing "b" from "h" and "1" from "l".

Though I suppose any halfways decent OCR is better than nothing. Too bad computers can't be made to do decent relative searching. Like knowing that "bitter" might be "hitter", if you tell it to match any 5 of 6 letters.

HNIW, if the OCR is decent, then that would be a good thing, because the text can be copied and pasted into a translation program so it could be converted into the readers native text.

Speaking of which, the best scanning I ever got was from PC PRO (UK edition) magazine. Whatever font they use for their magazine scans in perfect. Only had to correct 3 letters in the AA6 article scan. :)

Now if only everyone else would start using it for printing all those interesting books I've got my eye on. :D

Rhadon, you got a keygen or serial for Deductus? I've been looking for one, but their all for the old versions, not the 1.53.

FrankRizzo
September 4th, 2003, 01:52 AM
nbk2000: Try http://www.crackz.ws/d2.htm for the Deductus 1.53 crack.

EDIT: Also, I STRONGLY suggest that you change your active scripting preferences to "prompt" before visiting this site, and answer "no" to script requests (for IE: tools, internet options, security, custom level). Make sure that your ActiveX setting are appropriate as well. These sites are notorious for installing shit like XXXtoolbar and other goodies.

Rhadon

It especially has a problem with distinguishing "b" from "h" and "1" from "l". The problem with "1" and "l" is a common one (though it can come by to some extent by training these letters), but problems with differentiating between "b" and "h" is unknown to me. At least when scanning at 600 DPI, this has never come to my attention.

As for Deductus, I only had version 1.51 with a crack that messes the program up a bit, i.e. it crashes when indexing certain books. Thanks for the hint with the crack for 1.53 Frank Rizzo, I will give that a try.

nbk2000: Try http://www.crackz.ws/d2.htm for the Deductus 1.53 crack. This patch doesn't work because the version you can download from the Deductus website now is newer than the version the crack was made for.

NBK: I sent Deductus version 1.51 with that halfway working crack to the same place as I did the patents.

Ok, first of all, the trial period...was way cool!!! I am a member of a lot of forums and this is one of the few that requires a trial period before posting. In my opinion that is one of the neatest things I have come accross, it allowed me to view the forums, read what the members had to say and learn how things go. Very nice indeed.
Second, now to the point of my post, I have and I am willing to upload new programs, that members here might find useful, For instance, Office 2003 All-In-One Corp, Adobe 6 Full ISO, Nero 6 Full iso, plus others. I dont have much in the way of chemical related info, I do have Perry's Chemical Engineers HandBook laying around somewhere, but most of my stuff is Movies, Apps, and Music, around 150 gigs. This is my dilema, I tried to upload to the Ctrl-C acct but it seems down, I found another in this thread, but I don't have the right credentials. Anyways I applogize in advance if this is not proper, I just want to help out in the best way that I can, and learn some great information along the way, hopefully meet some great people and make some new online friends.

Look guys, the reason I havent been able to get the FTP up and running is two problems-

1) Im on a dynamic IP. Ive been looking into ways to make it static, but thats like finding a needle in a haystack.

2) Im behind a router. D-Link (not sure of the model number, but Ill get it on here tommorrow)

The problems are those. If someone with more technical knowledge of computers can help me, I can have the FTP set up in a day. I just dont know how to get around the router, and that cannt be removed unfortunately because my parents use the same connection and are too lazy to get a splitter cable and just skip the whole router... If someone can help me get things set up around the router somehow, I can figure out the dynamic IP problem. Once those are out of the way, setting up the FTP software shouldnt take more than an hour or two at most. Then all I have to do is re-instate all the users/ passwords, which will probably take only a week.

So if anyone can help me, just contact me by e-mail- chemwarrior136@ziplip.com

Hello
i can help you set a ftp since i am behind a router too and i've a dynamic ip:
visit this website: www.dyndns.org open an account and choose a website name, they will give you a secondary dominion for free (it means will be your name.something).
Go then to http://palacio-cristal.com/ and download the small proggie called DeeEnEs, it will automatically update your ip at dyndns each time it is changed.
Now install a webserver, or an ftp server on your pc (i suggest www.cerberusftp.com that is reliable and for free), and OPEN the port on your router, usually they have an http integrated page where you can do that, or a telnet one, in case you put on a webserver open port 80 TCP, in case an FTP you've to open port 20 and 21 TCP.
After you do that, give out the dominion on the forum, and everyone will be able to reach you whithin seconds, in case your ip changes deeEn will contact dyndns and update in 2 seconds, so.. i think is the best solution.
if you need configuration information you can refer to the pages i gave you or leave a message here i will contact you.

Hey, NBK I'm uploading Deductus 1.53 multilanguage to the FTP.
I hope you will find it useful. There seems to be a couple cracks out there for it. I will upload them when I get them.

A bit of a warning the "Crack" out their for this file by a group called trsh[?]
when it modifies the files it adds a virus to the main executable
bloodhound.w32.ep virus I belive, it is late and I can not remeber all the way. But I do not belive that their is a cleansing program out their to clean out the virus with out deleting the whole main executable.
