I bought a small IR sensor a couple of days ago. The product is supposed to be used in dark areas without any light source, when someone enters, it lights a 6v lamp for 20 seconds. It's beeing powered by 4 1,5 v batteries. The range is about 5 meters. It costed me around 14 $. I converted it to work in daylight(the area of observation had to be reduced, now it work's more like an IR trip-wire, maybe it can be solved) and to only stay lit for a few seconds.
Does anyone else see the potentials?
Here are three pictures:

Circuit: http://w1.478.telia.com/~u47802930/IR01.jpg
With a small pipe attached with tape(not very final), I have tried a pipe with larger diameter and it works better: http://w1.478.telia.com/~u47802930/IR03.jpg

We use them all the time at our gun club. You should have got some small plastic slats with the unit that decrease the spread (saves the pipe). The one we have in oz don't have the light sensor cut out and hense are active all the time. Try getting a PIR for an alarm unit they also have ajustible sensativity as well. Ours run to a LV / HV relay so that when you walk in an area it activates our moving animal targets. Or could acivate anything such as mine or mortar with electric ignition

Yeah, I was planning to get myself a better model to do experiments with, I bought this inexpensive one to have something to test with at first.
That's another good use for IR sensors, the shooting range. :)

You could use a metal tube around the exposed PIR sensor after you remove the wide angle lens.

Is the detector sensitive to the IR light emitted from an IR LED? If so, you could shine an IR LED down the barrel of your detector and you should have a fairly cheap and effective infra red 'trip wire'.
