sorry i didnt post this sooner, the auction is tomorrow (13/11) but you can register to bid right up to the time something you are interested in goes up on the block...

all sorts of large reactors, specialty glassware, hot plates, vacuum ovens, lab funature, you name it, they are probably selling it!

normally things DONT go for a steal.. too many people watch these web cast auctions these days, but every now and then something will go DIRT cheap... but regardless, if you do your homework on what you intend to buy, there still can be big $$$$$ saved at auction... as i have suggested before, bookmark dovebid.com and check it regularly...

the best way to shop for stuff at these auctions is look for sales that sell something OTHER than what you are interested in.... there is a search feature on the website that allows you to search all cataloged auctions for hardware you are interested in (auctions are normaly cataloged no more than 1 to 2 weeks in advance, so check back often) if you want a hot plate, refridgerated bath, and a glove box, the best auction to get something like that at would be an auction that is NOT a biotech or pharmacutical sale... at such auctions the buyers there will all be after chem lab related hardware, but alot of times you will find an auction for say an machineshop that had a small testing lab, and will have a few tools that might be of intrest to the home chemist.. this is where the really good buys normally come into play. (my best chem related buy off dovebid thus far was a neslab rte-111 refridgerated bath for 100$, brand new in the box). if you are looking for a vacuum pump that is rated for agressive chemical use, you might look for one at a semiconductor fab sale as there are normally alot of such items, or you may look at an unrelated type of sale to avoide compeating with guys who do nothing but buy and sell chem rated vacuum pumps...

One word of caution about dove-bid... they were investigated int he past for bidding irregularities.. one problem with their new webcast technology is often times the auctioneer with 'up' the price of a lot faster than your competition can drop out... when you go to bid if you hear the auctioneer raising the price very rapidly, even if you hear someone else still bidding against you, after you win tell the auctioneer (all bidding is done live over the phone, by calling into a teleconfrence 1-800 number) that you dropped out at some price below the last price he mentioned.. what will happen 90% of the time is the auctioneer will then ask for anyone to raise you at this lower bid, and no one will, and you just got your goodies at a lower price.. i have bought stuff for my buisness this way often in the past.. they tend to take their time selling the really expensive stuff, but for something that is 'just' a few thousand $$$ they will auction it off very quickly... the last sale i bid on for work i went up to 3000$ ea on 2 lots, and when the auctioneer told me i won, i said i tried dropping out at 1500$ ea.. he asked for bids higher than 1500$ (I know 1 guy was bidding against me, but alot of times your competition will know you want it more than they do, so they will just let you have it for the lower price) no one responded so i got the lots at 1500$, saving myself 3,000$
