Yesterday i went to the local rite aid to purchase an instant ice pak for ammonium nitrate. I purchased the normal rite aid brand "instant cold compress" and took it home. When i got home i started to use it for an HNO3 synthesis. As i was wondering why no NOx fumes were forming i glanced at the package and it said "Urea and water". The last time i bought the same stuff it was definetly AN and i am curious if anyone knows anything about the change. At least i found a cheap way to get Urea.

Since this stuff came from a store called rite aid and that it was rite aid brand that the rite aid company puts out tenders for this type of thing and whoever is cheapest wins. So my guess is that AN is either getting pricier or (more likely) there are too many restrictions coming into effect on quantity orders, such as those necessary to make cold packs.

Well, you can always make DNU from your cold packs. That's a decent explosive.

wouldnt it be more economical to just buy your UREA & AN in fertlizer form?

even if they aint pure they can be recrystalized pretty easy and you get bulk for cheap <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

A good reason we don't just "use fertilizer grade" is because ( at least for me) I dont have any place to do my reactions, out in the open here in the city. also, its faster to use in small amounts if its lab grade.

Zach, your post doesn't really make sense to me.

"A good reason we don't just "use fertilizer grade" is because I dont have any place to do my reactions"

If you don't have space to do your reactions, then how does using cold pack urea help? All it does is cost you more!

Personally I use fertiliser grade, and it is PURE! A full 46% ureic nitrogen. Just shop around to find the best brand. I don't buy it in bulk, but still it's only £0.79/kg.
And if you're really stuck for a source... well, you piss out about half a pound of it every week, so you shouldn't be! Although I can't say that I recommend the "DIY" synthesis.

Er, yeah, I'll refrain from posting while stoned from now on. I don't really get what I was trying to say either. It is easier for me to buy AN in small quantities over the counter than to go into a garden store, simply because I dont want to spend an hour riding the bus when I can just walk a couple of blocks to a walgreens
