I call crater makes "cobs" (CO2Bomb is where that comes from)which is the name used for them in Diary of a Pyro. Anyway...I was thinking about taping a cob onto an aerosol can. Has anyone done this before? What happened? I think hairspray would be best but does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.
btw, hoping for quick replies, I plan to test it tommorow if possible!

It would almost definately rupture the can, and the heat would be at least likely to ignite it, maybe another source of ignition after the cob has gone of would possibly help. Really, there's only one way to find out

These are called CNG bombs - Compressed Natural Gas bombs. The best canister to use is a butane or propane compressed gas tank, which are readily available at supermarkets for the purpose of refilling lighters.

I don`t think the gas inside the aerosol will ignite,The gas will probable blow the fire out,I heard something about charcoal soaked in a gasoline(Light it and wait till the charcoal glowes) there you can put the aerosol can up and when it explode the charcaol still glowes and ignite the gas.

Propane tanks are way too strong for a cob unless it had a HE or flash powder. I was thinking of butane, but the only ones I have seen are really small and cost a lot more than some generic hairspray. A road flare would be another good way to ensure ignition of the hairspray, but it would make a lot more light than I want. I will probably try it with no extra ignition source and if that doesnt work use a flare or charcoal briquet next time.

You could leave a burning blowtorch on the ground, in the vicinity of the bomb. The bomb would be a "cob" stuck to a butane canister. That would ensure ignition.

I' ve tried this cob and aerosol thing....
it's pretty neat if you have a place to do it... you'll hear a large explosion from the cob and you'll also hear the can explode, which makes a huge fireball (i used a spray paint can):D

Zero The Inestimable (before he quit pyro) documented quite a few cob/aerosol explosions. Check it out:

Pretty nice pics.

I guess they were metal spray cans ? What did you use to make 'em explode ?

Zero just tapes cratermakers to the side of the aerosol cans.

BTW, If you are going to use a cratermaker with a HE in it then you will need a seperate ignition source for the aerosol once it is ruptured. I use a container of KNO3/Sucrose rocket fuel that is set up so that it starts burning a few seconds before the cratermaker goes off (there is enough rocket fuel to burn for about 7 secobnds, so it is still burning when the can is ruptured). I then attach this container to the aerosol on the opposite side to the cratermaker.

I am actually about to try one of these, using a sparkler as ignition for the fuel, and a cob full of blackpowder to rupture the butane can. The sparkler might get blown out, so I might use a different ignition source. I'll post my results when I set it off.

I forgot to add, Zero mentioned that when he taped the cob to the aerosol can, and had the cob UNDERNEATH the can, it would usually not ignight the aerosol contents. He mentioned that having the cob ABOVE the can would usually ignite the can contents, as in those pics&movies I showed.

Zero used Black powder in all of his cobs.

I will also add at this point that those cans of butane that look like aerosols with no spray button work better than normal aerosols and are usually cheaper too.

They look like large aerosol cans and are made for use in small camping stoves, you can get a pack of four for $7.50AUD, that's about 1 US dollar each.

Yeah those ones are such a better deal than the lighter refill ones. This 4 pack cost me like $7Canadian while, just one of those lighter refill bottles cost me $5.75Canadian.

Has anyone ever tried taping a CO2 grenade to a can of acetone? Have a rag soaked in 50/50 gasoline and oil sitting a couple feet away on fire. I have put CO2 grenades IN small cans of gasoline and such but never taped anything to the side of a can of butane or the like. I should really upload all of the pics I have of my CO2 grenade experiments. Too bad I only have pictures of 1/3 of the CO2 grenades I have set off. Since were already on this subject, has anyone ever tried putting a box of say.. flour ontop of a CO2 grenade? Do unpressurized things like flour of non dairy coffee creamer do the same thing as a can of butane or spray paint?. I personally have a hard time getting things like NAP charges to light reliably unless I add a large amount of BP to the NAP or creamer.

I have found adding some AL powder into the cob will usually give the ignition effect one seeks to obtain to initiate the fuel of ones choice. The cob I used was with flash and some AL powder taped to a starter fluid can. I didn’t really take any measurements with the % or AL but Ill try some out and post the %.

I just tried one of these "cobs" and my results were pretty bad. I filled a co2 half way up with BP and stuck a fuse in it. When lit, it just made a large puff and flew about fifty feet away and smashed into a tree. My BP is pretty fine and worked well in other devices of mine, so I have no clue what went wrong. How far should I fill them up with the BP or should flash powder work better? Please help if you can.

If you BP works in other devices, im thinking the fuse hole was too large. It should only be about 1/8 inch diameter, but can be made larger, but a strong glue must be molded around the fuse to keep the gases in there when it explodes.
Flash powder will definatly work. The fuse hole can be a little larger than with the black powder, but it does help to keep it as small as possible.
No matter what explosive you use, be extra careful to keep you and all others and property a safe distance from them. They throw shrapnel, which has killed before. Weak explosives do not produce as much shrapnel, but it can still easily kill, injure, or do large amounts of property damage.

I guess you're right, the hole was quite big. If I make it smaller though, what would be the best way to fill it? The last time I tried to fill even the big hole it was quite hard. Any suggestions?

I have a suggestion. If you are using starter spray or something like it set it upright. I had one on the side and the top blew off throwing lots of the fire to the side, not up. The fireball would have been a lot more impressive if it was upright, plus it started a large leaf fire.
