I've spotted that smell after the detonation of acetone peroxide. But I don't know what causes it.
Can someone tell me the reaction of the AP detonation?

Probably water and CO2.

I think it's mostly CO2 and water as Fadetoblack said, but you also get CO, oxides of nitrogen and other nasty gases in small amounts.

Why do you think there would be nitrous oxides? there is no nitrogen in AP.

Haha, oh yeah. I was trying to remember the some of the decomposition products of commercial explosives, figuring that AP would have at least some similar ones.
Oops

There should be some hydrocarbons because the oxigen in the AP is not enough even to oxidise the hydrogen to H2O...

Yeah AP does have a distinctive smell. Sometimes quite nasty in a large cloud.

I beleive CO2 and ethane are produced by the actual decomposition of AP.. However the ethane is subsequently oxidised to CO2 and H2O.

can anyone produce a structural diagram of the molecule, and a balanced equation of the reaction?

go to www.roguesci.org/megalomania and search for AP, that gives a model of the molecule, the emperical formula and how to make it. but no reaction equation.

The equation fot TCAP would be:
C9H18O6 ----> 3 CO2 + 3 C2H6

Then

3 C2H6 + 6 O2 ----> 3 CO2 + 6 H2O

I think that's right; all those sub tags get confusing!
