Here's an interesting story (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_news/magazine/3115777.stm) about how the Pentagon was setting up a information trading market in an attempt to ferret out information about possible terrorist attacks.

This immediately reminded me of "Asassination Politics" theory, wherin people would "bet" on someone dying at a certain time, having paid into a money pool, and the person who got it right (presumably the assassin) would win the "prize" of all the pooled bets.

The professor who came up with asassination politics several years was prosecuted for it, but the same government now uses it to their ends, only with fancy Pentagon-ese terms.

Read the story and say what you think about it. :)

It was an interesting idea, however it was very quickly cancelled, for essentially the same reasons you pointed out NBK.

I thought it was an interesting idea, the stockmarket accurately predicts the economy 6 months inadvance. But I'm not sure it would work-apples to oranges comparison.I play the market from time to time(ATK was very good to me recently,GO GD!) and I watch DARPA for new investment ideas, plus they are always coming up with neat shit.I read they shot an artillery shell out of the sky with a laser(watch out Kim Ill).I digress,
I wonder what else they're working on to predict the future. The Shop?
political instabilities futures market, far out .is that on the CBOT or NYSE?

P.S.
NBK,whats up with the PGP tutorial?I get either a forbidden message if I go there,or a file not found if I try and download.

One part said how, just immediately prior to 9/11, that there was unusually large put orders on Delta and United airlines, the same ones that were jacked. OBL making a buck of the deaths of his fedaykin? I would, if only to recover capital investment, but you'll never hear about it on CNBC or CNN. :p

What PGP tutorial? If it was was one of my files that I linked to, then it's no longer on my site, so how hard is that to figure out? The things I link to on my site are time limited. After a couple of months, it's gone to make room for the new. :)

Maybe one of the members who has a copy will take pity on you and e-mail you one.

Yes, you get a spanking for not reading the whole thread, because a webpage tutorial written by someone else is still up, and teaches you everything you need to know.

Also, since my PDF was hosted by SATANIC, who's no longer a member here, is it any wonder that it's not still up? ;)

I'll be the one to take pity. I suppose it's worth seeing other members make use of such a resource.

John Brunner's 1975 novel "The Shockwave Rider" describes such a Terrordaq system.

In Brunner's future world (circa 200x), citizens gamble on the "Delphi" odds that such-and-so, everything from war and famine to soap opera events) will come to pass, in exactly the same fashion. Terrordaq could have been taken directly from the novel.
