diff acetylene

I am thinking about making some Copper acetylide and the last chemical i need is acetylene, i have 2 sources. one is my friend read you could make it with bleach and acid, i did a search and found nothing about that method, the other source is the same friend has a torch filled with about 40% acetylene and the rest propane, would the propane mess up the reaction?

tanks with pure acetylene are rather abundant as they are commonly used in welding applications, i have never seen them used with propane,
- bleach and acid? maybe you'll get some wondefully toxic chlorine gas

hmmm...
CaC2 + H2SO4 ---> C2H2 + CaSO4
so acids can be used in place of water i'd expect, well to make it from calcium carbide...
since your from the moon there should be caving supply places nearby selling it for the carbide caving lamps.
the propane shouldn't affect the reaction so long as the solution doesn't contain concentrated acid. i don't think propane is that reactive (apart from with oxidisers! :rolleyes: ).
also copper acetylide is very sensitive, again i havent; made this stuff so i can't say how sensitive, i know its much more sensitive than the silver salt which is a far better choice!

edit: what the fuck?...i didn't see the bleach bit.....sounds like some k3\/\/\/l crap.

He tried it and thought it worked because i heard pure acetylene burns with black suite and his mix (acid did that, but after the maybe acetylene had stopped coming he said it also made chlorine gas which he recognized by the green. the propane/acetylene tank was cheaper than real acetylene and it is in a disposable tank, but it say 41% acetylene on the tank so maybe i should just try a small amount.

Sorry i didnt think much and i just found out my friend is a dumbass
he showed me the book and it is a demonstration showing how chlorine reacts with acetylene and it shows the bleach and acid making chloring gas and then theres a piece of calcium carbide at the bottom of the container its connected to, but im still wondering about his part acetylene/propane tank, its called methyl acetylene propadiene stabilized and i still have no access to a real acetylene tank.

Ah, MAP gas.

I don't think it is just a mixture of propane and acetylene though, sounds like a compound of acetylene.

It helps if you use the proper abbreviation.

MAPP = methylacetylene-propadiene

You could try it, but I doubt it will work.

I'd strongly recommend against furthur postings till you've read some posts here. I'd also recommend reading the "Banned For Life" section so you can see what your doing wrong here.

And isn't "diff" supposed to be "different"? You could spell out such a simple word and seem less idiotic.

Most MAPP mixtures I've seen contain about 70% propane and anout 30% methylacetylene. I think the reason for methylacetylene being used over pure acetylene might have something to do with the ability to compress the former without the need for acetone.

I don't know if MAPP will work, although I doubt it. That methyl group will probably be hard to shift.

anybody know the formula of copper acetylide?
we know Ag2C2...silver replacing the hydrogen i think....i'm actually not sure if thats the formula either...
Cu(NO3)2 + C2H2 -----> CuC2 (?) + 2HNO3 .....i dunno......its too late to think!
is it ionic or covelent or both?!
i have absolutely now knowledge at all in this area of chemistry so can anybody help?
