I am posting this for those of you that this will appeal to (those of you with somewhat warped senses of humour).

Basically, it is 4 short videos that are excerpts from a larger one (but you have to pay for that and I can't find it from any Warez sources) where several guys obliterate praire dogs with .223, .22-250, and .17 HMR.

Here is the link:

I recommend downloading the "Maximum Carnage" video first as it is small but gives a good idea as to the content of the rest of them :) .

And here are some stills:

EDIT: For some reason the pictures appear as links and won't show automatically.

No matter how sick it may be I share your sense of humour :)

It's fun to see how one of the dogs still have his/hers feet on the ground and it's head in position allthough everything behind the legs have been obliterated.

I've seen som nasty hits on birds I've shot. Even cut a magpie in two halvs with the 22LR once(yellow jacket).

Are they using HE ammuntion? Or is that what happens when you shoot one with a .308?

irish
October 29th, 2003, 05:09 AM
That is what happens when you shoot small critters with very high velocity (between 2500 and 3000 feet per second are common for a 22-250) soft tip bullets, great effect isn't it ;) . 22-250s are very good on cats and foxes too, under 100 metres it look's a lot like that :D .

McGyver, they are using bog standard OTC varmint ammo in calibres .223, .22-250, and .17 HMR and you would know this if you read my post at the top of this thread.

Now you all know why the .223 Remington is the standard US military service round  .

If the military used soft-point like they guys instead of FMJ it would make the round alot more deadly, here is a pic of a .223 ballistic gellitin test

I have shot ground hogs with a 7.26, but never had such *explosive* results. The only time something close to waht happens in the video is when my friend shot a dead hog with a .308 it fliped in the air and splatered blood on my friend.

A-BOMB, unfortunately you can't have your cake and eat it too, making the bullets frangible would make them less effective at penetrating armour.

McGyver, the explosive results come from the fact that the ammunition used is soft/hollow ponted and shatters or expands violently on impact

Add 1000.

A rabbit jumped out in front of me today, thought this would be one for the forum, aimed the .25-06 but only hit him in the bloody leg (http://ww1.altlist.com/~52497/rogue.altlist.com/images/rabbit.jpg). But honestly ive shot rabbits with all manner of things and never had them explode like the praire dogs in those videos, they must be little puss balls. Closest ive seen would be a .357mag (2600fps out of rifle) which gives a distinct popping sound and flying bite sized rabbit chunks, the faster ones just give a long smear up the grass. Nothing as amusing as those vids :D

Axt, thanks for the correction I looked at my post the next day and then couldn't edit it :( , I don't know what round I was thinking of at the time  .
PanMaster, the good thing about the calibers talked about here is that you don't need to dig a grave :D .

LMAO about the grave irish.

And BTW, you were probably thinking of .308 Winchester when you posted those fps figures.

This business of using smaller, faster bullets is too uncertain for my tastes. Jus use a bigger gun (http://www.thegunzone.com/people/lahti.html) if you want more effect...

xyz
November 29th, 2003, 09:33 PM
Personally, I also prefer bigger slower bullets, but oh the entertainment value with hypervelocity frangibles...

That lahti looks nice, Unfortuneately anything over .50 is classed as an artillery piece in Australia and needs government permission to import...

Are you sure? 10ga shotguns and .70cal muzzle loaders for examples over .50.

I think the Boyes anti tank rifle is 55cal. which ive seen for sale.

I prefer bigger faster bullets myself :D (300 Win. mag, 375 H&H mag etc.). Also there is no caliber limit here, large caliber guns for firing shells are a no no (pity ;) ) but on a cat. B licence you can have muzzle loading cannon, I don't know if they will approve a permit for a 16 inch muzzle loader navy gun or the like though :D .

Ps I too have seen Boyes anti tank rifles for sale here and they are 55cal. (may have to save some cash  , I think Ironbark ammo have rounds for the Boyes rifles).

irish ,

Hardly ever hear mention of the .375 H&H . IIRC the groove diameter
is the same for the .375 H&H and for 9mm pistol . So it might be
possible to use a lightweight 9mm jacketed hollow point pistol bullet
as a high velocity varmint load . A similar groove match exists for
the .458 Win Magnum and some .45 cal pistol bullets .

Has anybody else thought about this combination or tried it ,
or even heard of such a thing being tried ? The velocity and
energy would be quite high , like a .22 250 on steroids .

Axt and Irish, there are no restrictions on calibre inside Australia, it is just that you can't import any weapon over .50 cal. without special permission (which I don't think you are likely to get).

Nice movie Axt.

It appeared that you were pretty close to the explosion, weren't you worried about getting sprayed with flesh and blood?

Axt
December 22nd, 2003, 03:34 AM
Nah, I was a long way from the camera. I was standing about where its head landed which you can see exiting the top of screen at high velocity.

December 22nd, 2003, 04:50 AM
How did you get the camera to zoom out? Were you remote controlling it?

the animal was dead before you blew it up right?

Axt
December 22nd, 2003, 09:34 AM
I just edited the movie, no remotes.

Of course it was dead, I just layed it down in position to stiffen overnight, so I could sit it up for the shot.

What kind of explosive did you use on it, ETN?

Axt
December 23rd, 2003, 01:28 AM
It was actually two small charges, one of ETN and other of ANNM which I taped together. about 20g ETN, 40g ANNM at a guess.
