View Full Version : Who would like their own free webspace on Rogue Science?

I have acquired some new software that will allow me to use the Rogue Science server like a webhost for additional accounts. I was thinking about letting a handful of members on a first come first serve basis host their own websites (within reason). I am thinking 10 MB of space and 100 MB bandwidth max for starters for maybe 20 people. For members with over 100 posts by the way (unless you have a good site).

I don’t know if I can actually get this to work of course. I would like to see those of you with websites on explosive related themes get hosted. Since space is limited I’ll have to evaluate who gets in. Of course I will accept the very things the other free hosts would boot you for :)

Any interested parties?

I would be interested. What all information are you looking for from the members?

Thats a generous offer, but would it not be more useful to host an image server for all to post thread related images?

Second that, I am up for some space. Gay geocities. When ever I update my site, most of the time I can't even view it for a day or two because so many people visit it. This (http://www.geocities.com/blindreeper_chemistry/) is my website at the moment. Mega would it be in the qualifications of this free space? I have the over 100 posts and I think my site is good :p I would be very inclined to make a better one if I had a better host. Things such as better sub sections and better colour schemes to mention a few.

I think an image host would be a good idea as well... Since I don't really have a site with the kind of subjects that come up in E&W, I am not really interested in having an account here as I would just be wasting space which could be used for better purposes. I would, however, like to do some web design for anyone needing help :)

But yes... Image hosting would be good (:p)

I'd like it. I could then finally update my website about 3D models of explosives, because anycities blocks every single filetype except zip, html and jpeg, which is highly annoying.

I think a small image server would be great for the forum, you know it happens, some one posts a link to geocities or somewhere else and too many people look at the thread and the site gets restricted for a while, and no one knows what the hell that person if talking about because not seeing the pic. I hate this computer I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. My cable connection is like my old 28.8k modem

All right, all right, I agree it may be time for an imageserver, but lets take it slow. Our software can already do it so why don't I let you guys attach images? Subject to mod approval of course and only in a handful of sections. We will see how this works.

Ok, since you're offering your serving for free this is not competing with you, so I will post it. If you think it's inappropriate you can of course delete it:

Many people here are looking for a good webhost. One of my personal friends has been running a webhost for a few years now, from his basement. He's given me free webhosting (since I'm a friend) at pyropage.cyberarmy.ca for about 2 years now. I mention this because:
- As long as it's not child porn he doesn't care what is put on it. He's not really into our kind of stuff but is quite against censorship. In this spirit he even offered to host Roguesci for free but was turned down. I'm guessing wouldn't currently have enough connection to handle it properly anyways. The company is soon expanding to a 100mbps/1terabit transfer per month connection.
- As long as the money comes in no other details are required. Paypal, cash in the mail, cheque, money order, whatever.
- Since he is a real web hosting company there is obviously no shit going on with things like not being able to transfer files with certain extensions.
- Pigs Can Fly (yes that is the name of the company... at least it's easy to remember) isn't free but it's damn cheap and you will get way more space than any other place (basic package $5/month (Canadian) gets you 750megs of space, 1 gig transfer).

The website is www.pigscanfly.ca

Edit: I just talked to him about this and he also said that he has found a way to get free dial up internet for anyone in Canada or the US. It's basically add free since it redirects you to a page every month (you type in a URL and it goes somewhere else - but it's only once a month). For signing you up he gets $2/month (or maybe it's just $2).

It will be interesting to see how long he/his company takes the heat before rolling over!

Might I suggest that if you do take this offer up, you take care not to pay by a traceable manor, as this guy is working from his basement, and is probably a vISP, with a server in a rack at someone else's place. If his "upline" gets any flak, they will pull his plug. If he gets a visit, he will probably have to tell all he knows. Make sure he cannot tell them anything useful!

Having said that, it is cheap, so if you want to, go for it.

I thought of a really good way to trap all the IPs of RogueSci members.

Simply get a nice page up, and get a link on the forum. Now just use the refer page header to see the members arrive, and log the IP at the same time.

Another way would be by tracking a picture you had linked up to a page, as your server would send it direct as a request from your machine, it doesn't go via the server...

Yes, I am paranoid. Most clever people are, because they see the ways in which these things can be used against them. Which describes most members-in-good-standing of this site...

In other news, Great idea with allowing the image linking, Mega!

Oooooh, I'd like free webspace... so many things to share, so little... webspace.

Definetly would be something to look into. I have started to make explosives information websites so many times and they have all fallen to different fates... most often because the server deleted my site due to not updating if frequently enough...

I' was thinking about making some avi or other movie files with experiments about this stuff (E&W) improvised, mostly related to how to improvise and measure your results, monitor experiments and so. It would be nice if this free space is still available, to made me start moving my ass and do it!
