I have just learned the sad news that Kazaa Lite is no more. They have been officially shut down by legal pressure from the makers of Kazaa. While the existing Kazaa Lite clients will still work, there will be no more updates.

Lets home some hackers can rip out the scumware in future versions of Kazaa.

No!!!!
Any suggestions for an alternative?
eDonkey?
I know we've seen this with Napster, but the RIAA pressure and the monopolizing for the likes of iTunes, etc., may make it very difficult for any newcomer to stand any reasonable length.
I can't imagine life without P2P! :(

I use only IRC, and http://www.ircspy.com . IRC is faster, and there rarely are bogus files. Also I haven't heard of anyone getting sued for using irc... that may soon change however.

I recently visited http://www.k-lite.tk/ to look for an update, and was shocked to see that they now actually ask people to pay in order to download files for "free"!
However, if you're not too late, you might still be able to download Kazaa_Lite 2.02 fromhere (http://ftp.freenet.de/pub/filepilot/windows/filesharing/kazaa_lite_202_english.exe).

If you have KaZaA and want KaZaA Lite then just search on your normal KaZaA for it. You will find that you are able to download KaZaA Lite from your standard version of KaZaA :)

What a coincidence. I just installed eMule yesterday and have found it to be MUCH better at downloading large files. I have been trying do download some large (~700 megs) files for months using the kazaa network and they haven't moved a kb. This was using K++. Now they are moving along nicely using eMule - one of them is almost done (~2 hours left - took about 30 hours). eMule also has a whole bunch of interesting statistics that it collects, plus some other good stuff about it. The site is http://www.emule-project.net/.

Kazaa Lite K++ has been down for a little while now apparently, but it still works just fine, and it has an AVI previewer, auto source updating and things built in in the last version, so there's no reason to stop using it.

It had to be closed down after pressure from sharman networks, the current owners of the original kazaa app. There are a numbe of improved p2p clients emerging, so I don't think it's going to become a massive problem. I hang out at the kazaa lite K++ forums a bit, so it's worth having a look people, as there';s plenty of discussion about other p2p's as well. I'm using soulseek for music, and bit torrent for some movies, though kazaa lite mostly.

I have eMule and Kazaa lite. I find KaZaa lite good for small files such as MP3s. Kazaa is also good for movies. eMule is good, but because my cable ISP is draconic, it include uploads on my monthly download limit. Given what eMule is like when it comes to uploading, if I didn't limit the upload speed, my monthly limit would be reached in a day. I also find download speeds on eMule to be much slower with a 700mb file taking 2-3days to download in comparison to KaZaa which takes 1-2 days.
When my new unlimited* plan kicks in I won't have to worry about uploads and downloads.
As for Kazaa lite. "you can shut it down, but you wont make it shut up"

I personally use both Kazaa and DC++ (http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/) . While kazaa has lots of users, DC++ allows you to actually browse the shared content of the members. Instead of downloading and album from files scattered around, you can get entire folders!
There are hubs you are supposed to connect, and because of the rules, with even around 100 members you can get quite a lot of files (there are limits of 100 Gb of shared files for some hubs!) Usually, with 5 Gb you can get connected.

If you only look for mainstream files like the latest movies, games and music; DC++ is superior to the Kazaa network because everyone shares a lot of files (and maximum upspeed!!!) and are keen on getting member accounts on private hubs (therefor they share as many good files as possible and they don't use upspeed limiters).

But if you are looking for rare files you don't want to try out 100 hubs ( a hub is like a server to which users can connect, since there are thousands of hubs the network can't be closed like Napster was) you may want to try a P2P provider which gives you the ability to search hundreds of thousands of users.

Like someone else said, IRC is good so is any decentralized p2p network like DC++. WinMX is not good for large files as it is difficult for them to be completed once disconnected from a source. Kazaa Lite is good if you get a copy.

I am suprised there is not some way to bring all of the hubs together into one big searchable database. That is what I thought DC++ did when I first installed it some years ago. I suppose I should give it a whirl now that I have a much bigger hard drive. Imagine how much better kazaa would be if people had to offer a few hundred megabytes of files...

I found Imesh to be ok, although I hate the popups...I'm sure there is a way to disablet hem, or run a different version, free of pop ups and spyware though...

By the way, hasn't anybody noticed, how shitty the songs are getting on Kazaa? A few songs I've downloaded, popular ones...have been fucked with by someone...distorted...weird...maybe there is an explanation for this somehwere? :)

Yes,its a way the RIAA uses to get you to waste bandwidth. If you look in the Kazaa forums they give explicit search parameters in order to avoid these fakes.BTW for anyone interested,Ive all but given up distributing texts on kazaa, the best shit IMHO is now on emule.I use Kazaa only for music and porn now,and even then emule has plenty of both.I wish emule was as easy to use as kazaa,it takes a little getting used to.

How would Kazaa be able to shut anyone or anything down? Isn't Kazaa already illegal in itself? This is all referring to the US government, yes?

I used cleanKazaaMediacenter the other day, yuck!I hated it.You could run muliple searches on it similar to emule, however, which is nice.I uploaded it to the ftp,if anyone wants to try and reverse, social engineer,or tweak it.

How do you mean that?

The default install of eMule found plenty of servers for me.

DimmuJesus:
I highly recommend these 2 servers, the french RAZORBACK (~230.000 users with ~17.000.000 files!!)
and the spanish S.E.D.G (~200.000 users).
I have never needed other servers to find all that stuff I was searching for ;)

Clean the file "staticservers.dat " in the "Emule\config" directory and then insert
these two lines:

195.245.244.243:4661,1,Razorback
38.119.96.15:4661,1,.S.E.D.G.

I use overnet myself (www.overnet.com). I changed from kazaa lite months ago.
Apparently the latest version includes the capability to add plug-ins to download from other peer-to-peer networks, which will be handy if anyone every actually writes a plug in.
As it stands, there seem to be plenty of files. I'm mostly using it for Tv shows and music downloads.
Half a million users online right now, which isn't too bad.

Voyager, what I meant was finding a server that has a very large amount of useful files. One where I can find several files possibly pertaining to issues discussed in this forum and have plenty of sources to download from very quickly.
Thank you jelly, I'm going to give these a try. That's pretty much what I was asking for.

I hate when Overnet says "Looking..." for 2 weeks and there is missing only few megabytes form
the file... I use nowadays eMule, there I get some good speeds, but sometimes it's only about
5 to 10 kb/s =/

None of you have said a word about bitTorrent, people say that you get really good speeds whit
that, but you can get only as fast as you update to some other one. You need to install bitTorrent
(ooh =) ) and then go to t.ex. www.suprnova.org and download a little file, and then bittorrent begins
the downloading. I have some problems whit that, but it's maybe that I just don't know how to
use it right.

bitTorrent was mentioned in another thread, but was worth mentioning here. It really can be a great program, and you can find alot of great downloads, but the program takes up all your bandwith. I use a cable modem, and when I download with bitTorrent it takes awhile just to load simple webpages.

someone needs to code the "trillian" of the p2p world. A client that will search multiple p2p networks at once.

I think such a program would reuire more bandwidth than a traditional p2p client. Also, who would write such a beast. you would be taking traffic away for the *one holy p2p network*. Also I think a programer might (but probably not) run into problems syncronizing locks (or something) if connected to more than one network at a time. Yes, a really neat idea though.

I do believe overnet (edonkey) includes a developers package that allow people to create mods that allow it to connect to other P2P clients. Nobody has built one yet :(

I actually wouldn't be surprised if some of the "proctecion" programs that have come out recently do very little if not bugger all to protect the user.

I would have thought that backing up your files on a suitable medium (e.g. a removeable drive or on CD-R/RWs) would protect you sufficiently. A firewall may be of limited value seeing as you'd clear the P2P program for internet access, so if the attack came through the P2P software it may not be detected. Personally, I'm not aware of being attacked so far :)

I've noticed that there are several MP3s and MPEGs that open internet pages when you play them. A pop-up stopper tackles these fine. Has anyone had bad experiences with self-extracting files?
