does anyone know what it is in the environment that causes ap to breakdown? if so what is it and is there any kind of catalyst that can be added to prevent deteriation. if not able to be added to the mixture maybe it could be used to store it. any help is appreciated

dude a catalyst is used to speed up a reaction by providing low energy pathways with which the molecules ram into each other. a catalyst speeds things up, it doesn't slow things down.
i would suggest storing AP in a "burped" tupperware container, or in a vacuum. this will greatly help.

AP doesn't break down it just volitarises I suppose it's the solid equivilent of evaporating, it will turn back, usually in places you don't want it to.

Washing it to ensure that there is no acid content is very important.
But even then ap will sublimate, but it does so at more at higher temeratures. It should stop altogether if cooled.
