Bullet Jacket Shaped Charges

Heres probably the easiest source of small copper liners for shaped charges - full metal jacket bullets!

To get a thin walled copper liner all one must do is heat a FMJ bullet with a propane torch until the lead melts out the bottom. The added advantage of using a bullet as a liner is that you also have a readily available casing AND a perfectly centred hole (flashhole) for initiation. One can simply fill the case with the explosive, push the "liner" into the case with a vice compressing the explosive and then initiate it through the flashhole by using a small charge in the primer socket.

You may be able to get away with pressing the primary into the base of the case and fusing through the fashhole, though the smaller you go with shaped charges the more difficult it gets, using the flashole as an initiation point gives it the best chance of working.

Heres an experiment I had done to see the effect of two different charges using copper jacketed bullets as liners, first one being a .308 case with a WWII .303 FMJ and 3g charge, the second a .22 K-hornet case with its .22cal. FMJ bullet and 0.6g charge, both are a "spitzer" shape using compressed PETN.

The SC effect from these charges are easily seen in the photos, this opens up a whole range of possibilities from the vast range of bullets and calibres available as well as case types. Will a bottle necked case perform better then a straight case? round nose over spitzer? who knows. How about near hemispherical liners (hemiliner.jpg) such as found in the majority of handgun bullets, or cookie cutter liners (cookiecutter.jpg). I know of at least one big game bullet that has a very conical nose, the variations are vast.

Wow that's cool, now why didn't anyone think of that? How thick were the sheets of metal with those two tests? They appeared to work quite well.

1" steel for the .308 though it was a bit more, must have leaned over before it fired as it hit it at a slight angle, and 1/4" Al for the hornet. The standoff was good for the .308 but the .22 seemed to crater around the entry hole, perhaps more standoff was needed, I never tried.

Using a standoff of +10mm for the .308 resulted in half the penetration so they are finicky.

Axt is gone because he asked a very novice question about .rar and.ace files that could have been solved by a search. He was flamed for it and gave an "up yours" to nbk. Nbk replied with his own style of up yours - a week ban, any post for any reason until the new year = Axt banned. Sadly he posted about bullet shaped charges. Maybe he didn't see the thread about his temporary ban. All I can say is he provided good info and its sad to see him go, he always provided new material and neat presentations like this thread.

There's no need to make excuses for him. He's been here since I warned him, and not just posting this thread, as I reviewed his browsing history.

Plus, I e-mailed him the warning, so if he doesn't check his e-mail when he has 'net access, then that's his own fault too.

The only reason he wasn't immediately banned for disrespecting me was because he's been useful, so I was going to cut him some slack with just a slap on the wrist.

However, no one here is so useful as to be indispensable (that's rule number 1, after all) so his disregard for my warning could not be overlooked, regardless of what he may bring here.

Shit, even flashpoint...a total n00bie lame by our standards...has abided by the one week moratorium on further posting that I put on him, so the only reason Axt could have for posting would be because of overinflated sense of entitlement here.

Anyways, rape his site of all the movies you can because he's sure to take them down when he realizes he's not indispensable and has been banned.

Thats some really small but really nifty shaped charge action there. I don't see whats wrong with just using copper plating though. You know, like the 3mm thick soft foily stuff? Its what I use and I got it in a craft shop.

Hrmm, I don't have a photo. Basicly what I have is a roll of thick foil. 3mms thick aprox. Its made of copper and is soft and workable. I aquired mine at a craft shop. I have no idea what it can be used for in craft.

Is it just me or do these bullet jacket SCs look like the perfect tool for blowing out locks ;) ? The only problem would be the noise, 3g of PETN isn't exactly quiet.

I was thinking the exact same thing XYZ, some blue tack (sticky compound for putting posters on walls) or similar sticky compound a cartridge in the vicinity of .223 -> 22-250 and bingo no more padlock, deadlock, armagaurd truck back door, etc
