First use of land mines?

This article (http://maic.jmu.edu/journal/6.1/notes/robbins/robbins.htm) struck me as interesting. One thing I'm wondering about is the claim that the US civil war was the first use of land mines. I seem to recall earlier European uses, going back to the 1600's. Could anyone else come up with a reference to an earlier use?

I believe they were referring to contact mines....read on.
