I dunno if you guys already know about this... its VERY basic... but it helps explain some very fundamental shit about mortars / shells and some basic compound information...

In the article, it says that blackpowder is most often used as the propelant.

Surely with all the advances in chemical engineering there are better/cheaper/more efficent forms of propelent avalible on todays market.

No. There isn't. Disney spent a lot of time and money trying air cannons and electronic fuses, it was better timing and precision wise, but much more costly. Nothing beats black powder for day to day use. Every form of BP substitute has shown substantial drawbacks, and usually higher prices as well. 150 years of engineering hasn't been able to replace BP for general low pressure propellant use, military burst and ejection charges still use it for that reason.

BTW, use spell checker. Two L's and an A in "propellant"...
