This is culled from chemisty and techology of explosives.vol 3
The explosive properties of peroxides have attracted attention for a long time, mainly because of their initiating propertys;namely,in a confined space burning readily passes into detonation. In spite of this none of the peroxides has found pracical use. Some are rather unstable, others are very volatile and all are highly sensitive to friction and impact;eg.acetone peroxide, very easily prepared by the action of potassium persulphate on acetone in the presence of sulphuric acid possesses a very high vapour presure and is highly volatile at room temperature. In a thin open vessel a thin layer of the substace loses half its wieght in approximately 3 months Thr chemasch-technishe rrichsanstalt determined the rate of detonation of acetone peroxide in a tube of 6.3mm diameter;the rate of was found to be5190m/sec when thes.g was1.6 and 5290m/sec whenthe s.g was1.2
A peroxidewhich might have pracical importance and whichhas been the subject of extensive studies, is hexamethylenediamine peroxise, so called hmtd,a substance with a m.p 145.c
legler{86}was the first to prepare this substance by the action of hydrogen peroxide on ammonium salts in the presence of formaldehyde.later, girsewald obtained it by the treatment of hexamethylenetetramine with hydrogen peroxide. At present,it is rather difficult to decide between these two formulae, but it seems certain that the substance contains methlenemino groupsn-ch2 and peroxy groups-o-o-.this view is suppotedby the observation of t urbanski that the action of nitric acid on hexamethylenediaminean the presence of ammonium nitratr leads to the formation of cyclonite and formic acid.
Hexamethyenediamine peroxide is prepared by dissolving 14g of hexy in 45g of 30%hydrogen peroxide in a beaker chilled with a mixture of ice and common salt.21g of powdered citric acid isthen poured into the solution while maintaining the temperature below 0.c When all the citric acid has been added the whole is agitated of 3 hours ot o.c and allowed to stand for 2 hous at room temerature.the white crysalline product is filtered off and washed with water and alcohol to aid drying at rrom temerature.
Ill finish this later.
