The (un)Official Forum FTP is alive and well. Any person may upload to the FTP by logging in as anonymous, but there is a 1:5 ratio in effect (upload 1k you can download 5k). The ratio is for the number of bits per session, not the number of files.

To get an account you must have at least 10 posts. There are no longer ratioed accounts, with 10 posts or more you get full access. Post your intentions to receive an account in this thread please. Include the email address where you want the password sent, your username will be your Forum member name. Please post your email, I do not like having to hunt it down.

The address is:
ftp:// 204.210.178.18

All members who previously had ratioed accounts now have full leech accounts. If you do not have 10 posts, but you do have something worth sharing you will get a leech account if I deem the contribution worthy (Rogue Science related materials).

Rules for the FTP:
1) Do NOT hammer the site. Hammering will get your IP blocked. I suggest one connection attempt every 1 minute or more.
2) No more than 2 connections per IP accepted. There are only so many slots available, so don't take one away from other people.
3) No duplicate files. Please see the index before uploading something to make sure it is not already up. You won't get banned for uploading anything, if I did that nobody would upload anything at all. Just try to observe common courtesy.
4) All files are to go into the main FTP folder, not a sub folder. Sub folders are now locked, and it is preferred you do not create a folder of your own unless you have a large number of related files. For example if you have 20 split rars it is best to make a subfolder.

If there are any problems with the FTP site, please post them here. If anyone downloads a bad file, finds a dupe file, or a file that is misrepresented please report it here so it can be deleted.

I find some books on net mostly chemistry related but there is more then that:) I will in a matter of days start a scanning a Warren's book on rethrosynthetic chemistry Dissconection approach (I believe that's the name of the book). I didn't have time to learn the rules of the forum and exact procedure to upload/download books on it. I hope that it is not to much of me as an unexperienced user to ask that someone (maybe administrator) e-mail me the some "forum guide to dummies":(
When I have a book, what to do with it? How to upload it? Is it expected from me to read all ftp pages and folders that I do not make mistake and upload book that is already there? I believe that it was before some page or link to books that forum's ftp contained before this nonsense with forum being down? Are langueges other than english banned somehow? Is it expected from me that upload files only that I personaly scanned and can guaranted that it contain secure files, meaning that are not download from elsewhere etc. Thanks for patience:)

I think, that's no good idea. If an anonymous user behind an anon proxy can upload shit without having to fear any consequences... just to get enough download credits, then he will upload shit.
Why should an anonymous user scan books and upload forum related stuff, if he gets 1 GB download credit by uploading a 200 MB Windows swap file or a huge collection of Koran verses? :D

Our world is, in different cases, good and sh*t.
Sites closed that hasn't do any mistake, and sites.......that has do any type of mistake open!
Ok, moralism is a part of human life, but I think that this time is better to do (if possible), not to think...
Any person that can post a user and pass for the FTP archive ftp://204.210.178.18 is welcomed.
The idea is to make avaible an account at all members that read this forum.
We download from ftp://204.210.178.18 and secondly upload to sciencemadness FTP, myebooks.dyndns.org !
Isn't a good idea? Modems and modems that download and then upload are better than a single modem!

Thanx for the collaboration!

JohnWW

Good idea! To get a user-name and password, with full leech access, for the Roguesci FTP site, ftp://204.210.178.18 , one normally has to make at least 10 posts to their forum, then apply; except that uploads can be made with anonymous log-in.

Or you can send an user-name and password for it privately to sciencemadness.org members.

John W.

The probably only way to keep the good download speed of our FTP: burn the entire FTP stuff onto DVD-Rs and send them to all admins of explosives related forums on the internet... plus monthly disks to keep them up-to-date :D

Just kidding... ;)

megalomania
August 21st, 2004, 09:20 PM
Actually I was thinking of distributing them via DVD's to people who make a large donation. It costs $10 in materials and shipping to send out the 5 disk set as it is. In a matter of weeks it will require 6 DVD's since 5 can barely hold everything when completly compressed in a rar.

It might be easier all around if people sent a pack of 5 DVD's in a mailer box with return postage already on it. With a suitable donation of $50 or more of course, like how they give gifts on PBS during pledge drives.

Any person that can post a user and pass for the FTP archive ftp://species8472.dyndns.org, ftp://science:science@203.193.194.11, and myebooks.dyndns.org is welcomed.
The idea is to make avaible an account at all members that read this forum.

All things being equal we have just as much a right to their content as they think they do to ours.

beside of leeching what could you reasonably expect from a guy nicknamed "kazaa something"?thay'd better putting all of their money together to buy the dvd backup of the ftp (great idea it will allow ppl that want to help the forum but haven't files to upload to have full access to knowledge while being useful), or they should at least asking in a polite way if they should trade files to make ALL the ftps more complete, it's not a race after all, it's all about spreading of information, but looks like they don't really care about equality:(

correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they have a large amount of the same contnt as the roguesci ftp on their ftp's already anyway?

August 22nd, 2004, 02:44 AM
Well gents,

although it isn't my FTP (the species8472 one, which has more than 20GB of data), I am speaking up for axehandle for the moment (on behalf of him for the time being - he's sleeping by now I guess :) - and he's getting this as soon as I hit the 'submit reply button' ).
I know axehandle quite well, and he is an extremely generous chap (I couldnt possibly understate that). But there is no need for trying to outwit the respective FTP owners. It won't work (peacefully & effectively at least), for either of us.
And yes, information is free (please bear that in mind).

So - for the mutual gain for all of us, either both E&W & MSDB post open leech accounts for transferring data to the respective FTPs - or a mutual mirroring service (of sorts) is established. Alternatively - transfer is done 'unofficially' (i.e. no open leech accounts, no mirroring - just the normal P2P sharing) - which seems the most likely option at this point.

But let's please not encourage some 'un-moral' way of leeching data (because, as said above, it isn't going to lead to peaceful & happy relationships, so to speak - and why creating trouble if there is no need for any?). Anyway - the topic that kazaa created got closed, for that reason.
(see http ://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=2453 for more)

Personally I'd be most happy with the following : Both EW/MS FTPs mirror their data, as far as this is possible (as arranged between the respective FTP owners). This way there is maximum benefit for all of us, and yet some control remains over who gets access. Am I being stupidly enthusiastic/idealistic?

Any thoughts? But please let's not do it the sneaky way. That's all really. My five cents so to speak :)

megalomania
August 22nd, 2004, 07:02 AM
I would be perfectly happy with as many FTP sites distributing as much information as possible. Recent events have shown just how important it is to get the information out there. With each passing hour the information gets distributed to more and more people, but the government and other nefarious originazations are conspiring to steal this knowledge. Controlled access to this information is necessary only to insure that this community get first crack as opposed to the FTP getting published to every warez board on the web and attracting unwarrented attention. With more FTP sites this is less likely to happen.

I am sure retrosynthetic would be happy to upload the entire contents of the FTP and set up mirroring with whatever member wants to run their own service. There certainly will be torrents created for every section on the FTP. Members are encouraged to start their own torrents, and that suggestion also goes out to other boards and FTP siteops. Torrents remove the bottleneck of limited bandwith an FTP has, and the wider the distribution the faster you get the file. In the few short days the torrent tracker has been up it served up 20x more bits per second than the FTP can at its peak.

Well, the recent loss of threads has set back my post count, but I just realised after this posting. As for anonymous uploading, when I log in that way the bandwidth I get usually isn't even enough to keep the connection alive, it always times out. I won't upload 20 MBs of books over a 0.5 kb/s connection.
Books in question are Assorted Nasties, Federal Bomb Intelligence (collection of Bomb Squad Bulletins), Rockets Red Glare, Successful Armed Robbery and Techniques of the professional pickpocket.

A few hours ago I had no problems with the u/l speed (20+ kbs), but with the d/l speed (1.5 kbs) :p

Mega mentioned the cause of such temporary problems in another thread.
The DL speed depends... it depends on whether or not a certain operator of the FTP is concurrently running Direct Connect and Edonkey at the same time to download a few files (and ends up uploading 100 times what he downloads). Other than that you should get 20k/sec on average if you can handle it.
Many thanks for scanning the "controversial" books :)

In the recent days people are uploading files with unidentifiable names. Please make sure that everybody knows about the content of the file when he/she reads the filename. "gun.pdf", "para_ida.pdf" or "gb2a.pdf" etc is too vague.

Dear Megalomania,

Having now made something like 25 bona fide posts, and having been a member since September 2003, please give me a log-in name and password for access to the FTP. To contact me, please use this email address: swell002@yahoo.com .

As for possible uploads, I have over 120 Gb of scientific, engineering, computing, conspiracy, business, occult, and UFO -related ebook and program and sound video files, of which at least 30 Gb are e-books and programs on subjects directly relevant to the forum, viz. chemistry (including military chemistry), chemical and mechanical engineering, physics, and biochemistry. The FTP probably already has many of them, so when uploading I will make sure they are not already present.

Thanks in advance.

I jump to this forum and read it so I couldn't make myself quiet I not to say something (even if it will make ka-boom:).
When we speak about other ftp sites that "inadvertedly borough" some content from this one, we should have two things in mind. First we all "borough" information through this scanning/OCR/pdf-ing kind of anti-copywright procedure . BTW I'm foreigner little unfamiliar with this terminology...didn't I copy that right?:) So let's not be so jugdemental toward other people. It is their lack of good manners and solidarity which makes us angry on them for stealing things from here. Like that they are somehow smarter then us? Anyone who scanned even one book know amount of job it make, and I understand the grief. But for instance let see the other side of this ftp site 230.193.194.11 seems to contain a partial mirror copy of this site, in the days when this forum was down wouldn't you all be happy to know that they can't hide the thruth, that the web and freedom can't be stoped? Everything has it's good and bad sides.

Works very well. Thanks for the scans :)
But Harber did the same mistake Kurt Saxon did in one of his "Poor Man's James Bond" books and "forgot" that ricin isn't an alkaloid but a toxic protein... "Ricin mixed with DMSO would be an outstanding weapon, both subtle and deadly" is BS.

WMD
August 24th, 2004, 07:35 PM
Did you expect anything else? People like Harber are Bottle Washers, you can give them rather simple lab tasks and send them to look for information but they won't go very far. But never the less you still find the occasional useful tidbit of information for your own nefarious purposes which might show you the general direction so you can search for scientific books and papers and maybe review articles and patents.
As for Harbers book, my favourite tidbit would be 'The Fang', a special injector at the end of the book. That's a nice idea you'll probably won't find anywhere else and you may or may not get the idea yourself.
But enough of my blabbering (at least in this thread), the other books have been uploaded. I especially recommend Federal Bomb Intelligence, very interesting as it's real world data and it really hurt me when I had to rip up the book so I could put it on the scanner nicely.

What gives with the FTP site.

Just as I get enough download credit to get something, I keep get loosing the connection. :( :(

I don't mind uploading goodies for the site, as long as I can get something in return.
I have a lot of useful scanned books, info and programs available for upload but, it's hard on the nerves when you upload then get nothing.

THings I have for upload are as such.

Perry's Chemical Handbook ISO
Workshop Series Books, Sheet Metal Work, Foundry Work for the Amt, The Backyard foundry, taps and Dies.
Model Engineers Handbook
The Gun digest book of Shotgun Gunsmithing
The Medical Students Manual of Chemistry
Mr Single Shot Gunsmithing Ideas
Elements of glass blowing
Selected Pyrotechinc publications of Kosanke
Illustrated Dictionary of Pyrotechnics
Zip file of selected Pyrotechincal related stuff
lots of metal working stuff
lots of firearm related stuff.

I subcribe to the groups ideal of sharing the info. I want to share, as well as receive.
Any suggestions as to a solution to my problem ( apart from having 10 posts and an account)?

I have tried several different FTP programs WS / Cute / etc, but found bulletproof seems to hold in there the best.
I am running an xp system and have unlimited broadband account 256/64K.

Help!!

Dear Forum Members,
As you may remember from my previous posts (which were possibly lost during IDefense disaster) I made, I coded an app called FileLister for the benefit of the forum.

However after formatting of my harddrive and reinstalling of the OS, I noticed the app (after being installed on the root folder of a mounted pgp disk) does not work without an alias (which I deemed it should). However the last version I coded has solved the problem. It really works without an BDE alias and I would like to express my apologies to all who took the trouble of downloading and installing it but saw it does not work properly.

After expressing my apologies I would like to request the FTP admins to delete previous versions of the app and keep the file called "FileLister Ver (1.0.6.1) by AkinRog.exe", which is installer of the app.

Just keep in mind that you have to install it on the root folder of a (mounted) pgp disk to keep your file list secure.
Sorry for wasting your time and bandwidth.

HI!
I haven't been on the forum for a longer time, because I have spent my time with learning a LOT of chemistry in the past three years. Now I have only two years left to graduate as a chemist.
It's amazing, how many things has changed here. You all became much more serious!
It's a great thing, that you make available a lot of valuable chemistry literature. From the contents of the archives, it seems to be a trustable source of information.
I would like to get acess to download the contents of The Science library. My adress is: deezs@freemail.hu

By the way of literature: the library of our university is not too big, but we have a lot of books about synthetical organic chemistry, so if you need something specific information, maybe I can help you.

For all of you that would like to view any of the RAR'd PDF scans that I have been uploading, you need Adode reader 6.0 or better to access then. I use this as the scan size is smaller without losing quality. I intend to upload more later, but with the amout of traffic that the FTP gets, I end up frustrated with the connection loss and loss of credit.

If there is enough interest I might post some more soon if the FTP will hold in.

I'm considering uploading Cinema 4D (www.maxon.net), but I'm not sure if it's appropriate for this particular FTP. It's a 3D program... I guess it could be used for:
-Dynamics simulation: it comes with a nifty physics simulator
-Explosion animation: Not sure how this would be useful, but it has one of the best explosion setups made
-Alot of us are engineering students, and CAD is something we might use. It happens that most CAD setups have crappy animators/renderers (if they have either in the first place), so I use this Cinema 4D for all that.

I also have Rhino 3D, probably the best CAD modeler ever made.

I wonn't upload either ATM because a fresh new version of Cinema 4D is out and a new version of Rhino will be out too, I'd rather get a hold of those first.

Another possibility should be to connect to a FTP site via an HTTP proxy server. To find proxy servers in various countries, there are several sites which have up-to-date lists of free public proxy servers, e.g.
http://www.publicproxyservers.com/ ,
http://tools.rosinstrument.com/proxy/ , http://www.samair.ru/proxy/ ,
http://www.freeproxy.ru/ .
The IPs of proxy servers, with countries, are given on these sites, consisting of 4 numbers from 1 to 255 separated by ".". Also given is whether the proxy server is "transparent", "anonymous", or "high anonymity", depending on the need to hide one's identity and especially location from the site to which it is desired to connect. Some sites try to exclude people connecting from other countries, or particular countries. To use them, configure your internet browser or download client program to connect through a chosen proxy when accessing other HTTP or FTP websites.

Using other peoples FTP>HTML proxies means exposing your username/password to an unknown party, which is an unacceptable security risk for a user, and totally out of the question for me, having admin control over the FTP as well as here.

An HTML front-end that was ran on the FTP server would obviate that risk and make it safe to use.

Dear FTP Admin(s),

I believe it's only me who experiences this problem.

I receive the following message for more than two weeks.

Status: Connecting to 204.210.178.18 ...
Error: Unable to connect!
Status: Waiting to retry... (5 retries left)
Status: Connecting to 204.210.178.18 ...

I don't want to be insolent but I wonder if my IP range is banned from FTP.

I mean from the posts the other members made, I had the impression of other members able to connect to the forum FTP but me. If this is the case, then only possibility might be my IP range is banned from the FTP.

I don't want to be whining about it but if this is the case and done on purpose by the FTP admins, I may distresfully accept it (though I believe, if this is the case, it is unfair since I uploaded many books, apps, patents, etc. and did my best to contribute and most importantly comply with the rules), however if it is in error, I would be very grateful if you solve it.

Hello, I was wondering if anything more has come of this idea? I'd be willing to make a donation towards the legal fees of keeping roguesci open anyway but this is too much of an incentive to pass up on.

If this new ftp is good as it look now...I just start download...I would jump around for days from joy it will make to me. Over weekend I will search for a files to upload to you guys that I gathered at home. I can't do that today I have a paper to write:(
You know what is said...job is not done finished till the paper work is done.

Edit: I tried to DL large file and failed (what to say I'm greedy). But I want to upload the file and can't make it. Is there some upload folder I can't see or what? I constantly get timeout error when I try to connect!!! Help anyone! :(

Edit2: I downloaded Kirk-Othmer and it looks like good rar file, I unrar it and it contain cue and bin file. I tried to make a CD from it (Nero & Alcohol 120%)but only to waste couple CDs. What is the reason for this? It looks like good rar file or at least winrar say its OK so I guess it is correct as much as the checksum can be reliable. If this upload thing isn't solved can I mail some files to somewhere burned on CD? With this speed of upload it will be quicker method.

Edit3: Hell I will start to think that me being unable to open this file has to do something with that skunk project that is not general public business :(

A valid .rar file of random gibberish will still be a valid .rar of random gibberish. So it may be that the file wasn't ripped proper enough to burn, but that doesn't stop winrar from compressing it into a valid archive.

FUTI: What FTP program are you using? With SmartFTP and this new site, I got a server timeout on a download, but it resumed nicely when I told it to. Remember that to upload you have to highlight with your mouse the folder you want to upload to. I upped a couple .djvu files to the chemistry folder.

With K-O, I used a CD emulator instead of an actual CD - daemon-tools. Mount the image with d-t, and open the .bin file with it. You then get a setup wizard, choose to install to disk and it will be done.

Many thanks to the host for this service. Hopefully, people will choose their uploads wisely.
