View Full Version : AP solution evaporation -Increased Yields-

I have found that if a Acetone Peroxide solution is left uncovered, for a 1 hour period prior to crystal collection, a noticeable increase of 10% or more product is collected.
The reason is that acetone, being the most volatile of the solution, is also a powerful solvent of Acetone Peroxide. As the acetone evaporates, amounts of crystalline product are left behind in the solution in which they are not soluble, ready to be filtered.

Looks to me that you're just using too much acetone, if you get that noticable difference in yield ...

Which method did u use ?
And what percentage H2O2 ?

Do you mean leaving it in the open out of the fridge? I never cover my batches since I have a fridge of my own to have my nasty stuff in.

he means take it out the fridge and leave it uncovered for the acetone left in the solultion to evapourate. thus precipitating extra AP. but yes it does sound like hes using too much acetone but i think a little excess acetone is allways a good idea to make sure all the H2O2 gets used up.

My general formula(3% peroxide)
60 parts hydrogen peroxide
30 parts acetone
10 parts hydrochloric acid
If i used this formula to 100% ratio (100 ml solution)I generally get 1/4 of a film canister full. The yield is terrible, but higher concentration peroxides are harder for me to get than plutonium. I just can't find anything with a reasonable price. I'm not paying 50$ for a case of baquacil. I hate AP anyway

It would be quicker to dump the filtrate into water to ppt the AP.

ummm endotherm... I buy 3% as well and just boil it down to a little less than 10% of the original volume.. works great and yields are impressive if done right. It usually takes me a little more than 2 hours of boiling to reduce a gallon (~3.8L) of 3% into 300mL of ~30% H2O2. The AP I made last night had a mass of about 90g from the 300mL of boiled down H2O2:500mL acetone:28mL 94% H2SO4 after 12 hours.

endotherm,
Aren't you using way too much Aceton and HCl?
60 parts H2O2 (3%)
30 parts Aceton (100% I guess)
10 parts HCl (30% I guess)
All by volume I hope..
calculate the 60 parts of H2O2 to 30% 60/10=6
than your formula would be 6 parts H2O2 30 Parts Aceton and 10 parts HCl.
I'm not sure if I'm right, but this is what I understood from your story. I'm sorry If I'm wrong.
