Wow. I'm shocked. Take a look at this: http://www.freewebs.com/cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine/counterterrorism_degree.JPG

Sounds like a fun, useful course (NOT).

I am always up for spouting off my opinion so why not.

Could these universities truly teach us Counter-terrorism? They are funded by the government, and as such couldnt really describe to us how almost all of the terrorist acts today are perpetrated by our government. Wouldnt the real course be along the lines of Anarchy??

Honestly, I dont see a use for this, except for the government to say *Hey look at us! We are taking action. It may be pointless and not help anything, but hey, Any action is better then Inaction*

Eventually the job will become useless, when the fascist superpower has taken over the world, and terrorism will become practically impossible.

This also ties with the 'military propaganda in schools' (i found this at school, in the careers advice section). Think about it. If you fail school, you can get into the military. If you get into university, you can waste your time on a 3-year study course for counter-terrorism, and inevitably end up in the military.
It's kinda stupid having a 3-year study course, by then alot of focus would be off iraq and terorism, as the media grows tired of that and finds a new medium to spill propaganda out of.

I agree with you in the sense that true counter-terrorism is anarchy :D .
Also true that the government will take any action to shutup the paranoid soccermoms, even if the action causes a greater problem.

No. The picture is an advertisement in the career advice area of my school.

I find it hillarious that we have been having these threads lately and then tonight I walked into Borders(a bookstore) and whats the first thing I saw. 1984. On sale, Its a better edition with a new foreward by Thomas Pynchon. Eerie, huh.

Rather disturbing the tripe they are posting in the job area now. Thankfully mine mainly advertises for McD*s. Thats where most of us go anyways.

While McD targets your school, ours is targeted by Hungry Jacks (part of the Burger King corporation).

"Great traineeship oppurtunities!"
"Experience employment at a younger age to increase job oppurtunities"

Seems like they are dangling oppurtunity-on-a-string infront of our eyes and making us work for slave-labour saleries to earn it.

I would knock it, but if I had stayed working at my burger king job, I would have been manager last year, and probably made owner by this year. I kick myself for quitting.

And then there is the case for the stupidest girl alive. She had to be told to breathe in AND out, but somehow managed making it to Mid-national corporate chairperson or some such thing. We are talking high up on the ladder. I guess she knew her meats.

Why is it that a job like Micky D*s and BK are advertising at Colleges. It seems like they are trying to degrade our workforce.

There is no money in winning the "war on terror". There sure is money in keeping it going, though! :D

cyclonite4 : that degree is just another useless Bachelor of Arts degree with a major they have made up because its hip with the times. The people who take it will end up being the ones who go to student rallies against HECS increases and stuff cause it will take them a semester to realise that they will never get a job with their degree.

I also find it amusing that the people in the advertisement have been picked to show diversity....only problem is the black guy looks very african-american.. and we don't have too many of them in Australia.... and most of the africans in australia are skinny refugees

I agree Hobbit Porn, thats one of the greatest points about the degree, it's just a media-illuminated fad.

A little OT, but I remember my math teacher telling me that the year he joined university, was the first year they charged university fees, and that was causing protest.

On the back of the poster it says the degree will lead you to a job in Department of Foreign Affairs, Defence, Immigration (not implying anything :d), Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, and the Attorney-General's Office.

I say the degree is a load of shit

Counter-terrorism is actually responding the terrorists with terrorism. So if you have a good degree (like cum laude and above) in counter-terrorism, you may be employed by intelligence services.

And once employed you may start distributing new methods of terrorism by means of intelligence organization.

True counter-terrorism means snatching up suspected members of the 'terrorist' organization, torturing them till they give up fellow members, arresting them, repeating the cycle till you get the leaders, then execution the lot of them and vanishing the bodies in shallow graves.

Don't forget about developing a network of informants through bribery and coercion.

When you see a school teaching THIS, then you know they're serious about getting you a degree you can use! :)

Which leads to the obvious question:

Do you care whether you are killed by the government trying to protect you, or by the terrorists/freedom fighters trying to kill you?

Sounds a whole lot like the curriculum at School of the Americas (http://www.ciponline.org/facts/soa.htm) (Oh, I forgot- they changed the name after all that bad press it got) I meant the curriculum at the "Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation ".

But hey, with that degree you can earn even BETTER money working for the other side! (http://www.soaw.org/new/article.php?id=205) From Mexico
An October 22, 2003 article in The Brownsville Herald (TX) reported that the
notorious Gulf Drug Cartel has hired 31 ex-Mexican soldiers to be part of
its hired assassin force, The Zetas. According to the Mexican secretary of
defense, at least 1/3 of these deserters were trained at the SOA as part of
the elite Special Air Mobile Force Group. Their highly specialized and
dangerous weapons, training, and intelligence capabilities are now being
used to increase the availability of the drugs and terrorize the region. The
Mexican attorney general’s office implicates them in dozens of shootouts,
kidnappings and executions of police officers.

...killed by the government trying to protect you...

Ironic, yet unfortunately true. Seems the govs will shoot first, prove your a terrorist later.

NBK, do I detect a hint of sarcasm? :D
The graduates of tommorow.

Bert, quite a good point, even the 'terrorists' could benefit from such a degree.

Was I right?

An SOA degree guarantees employment anywhere in the world (where there's despots and warlords! ;)).

BTW, SOA was what I had in mind with my description. :)
