If you have a file that you wish to distribute to the Rogue Science community it is easy to make your own torrent. All you need to do is download and run a torrent file maker. I prefer maketorrent, which you can download here: http://krypt.dyndns.org:81/torrent/maketorrent/index.phtml#dl
The maketorrent program is pretty self explanatory, and the website link provided does a better job of explaining how to work the thing than I can.
As you create your torrent you will need a tracker in order for everything to work. There are many torrent websites than will let you use their trackers. The Beehive Tracker List maintains an active listing of public trackers that you can use. http://thebeehive.info/?p=tlist
Finally, you will need a bittorrent program to seed the file. Filesoup forums has a fine thread about every bittorrent prog under the sun here. http://www.filesoup.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=26643
For a handy visual guide to making torrents please see this wonderful website http://www.bittorrentguide.co.uk/maketorrent2c.htm

FYI - I clicked on the link (http://www.bittorrentguide.co.uk/maketorrent2c.htm) for the visual guide and and got a defective page notification - actually with some vulgar language on it, which is not something you normally see. The text also made some mildly threatening statements about the condition of my operating system. Fortunately, there seems to be no harm done.

Just for a test I tried to make a torrent of a US patent PDF file and posted it in the message on this forum.
I checked on the private box and it seemed fine at first, however now when I look in my µTorrent 1.6.1 info window, the tracker section says following:
Tracker URL: http://www.roguesci.org/theforum/announce.php
Tracker Status: Failure: VBTT 3.0: Error, missing key (passkey)
DHT Status: announce in X min (got 2peers)
What is that missing passkey? (Do I need it to create and seed the torrent or server needs some updates?)
Wonder why nobody here uses this torrent system, looks like it's been here for a while...?
Thanx

Maybe its just me, however has anyone else in Canada had trouble with Demonoid? I am in Canada and the demonoid page come up saying that legal action may be taken against them if they don't start blocking Canadian traffic, has anyone else had this problem?

Did you try UTFSE in the form of a Google query? If you had, you wouldn't have asked this question.

"Comcast does not block access to any applications, including BitTorrent," he said.
Douglas would not specify what the company means by "access" — Comcast subscribers can download BitTorrent files without hindrance. Only uploads of complete files are blocked or delayed by the company, as indicated by AP tests.
But with "peer-to-peer" technology, users exchange files with each other, and one person's upload is another's download. That means Comcast's blocking of certain uploads has repercussions in the global network of file sharers.
Comcast's technology kicks in, though not consistently, when one BitTorrent user attempts to share a complete file with another user.
Each PC gets a message invisible to the user that looks like it comes from the other computer, telling it to stop communicating. But neither message originated from the other computer — it comes from Comcast. If it were a telephone conversation, it would be like the operator breaking into the conversation, telling each talker in the voice of the other: "Sorry, I have to hang up. Good bye."
People having problems with P2P should understand the possible source of the problem if they are Comcast customers.

uTorrent has an embedded tracker. So anyone can create and share torrent without hosted tracker. uTorrent forum has explanation how to do that. Just tb.enable_tracker must be set on true in preferences. In tracker field you write your external IP/announce. And I had to change that IP with my local IP in uTorrent seed torrent"s preferences to make it work. Just check uTorrent's forum for better explanation.
