View Full Version : Problems with my FTP

Sometimes, problems arise for users of my FTP and I do what I can
to work them out. The FTP was setup in July 2005 so it's barely
6 months old and I'm no expert so I keep looking around on the net
for any information that aids me and others to keep it running
smoothly.

The FTP runs on FileZilla.
Server: version 0.9.8 beta
Client: version 2.2.14a
Link: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla

Platform: HP Pavillon a752n, 3.80 GHz, 1 GB DDRAM
Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600 SP 2
Internet Connection: Cable, my end - UL 768kbits/sec, DL 6mbits/sec
Dynamic IP, using www.no-ip.com hosting
Linksys wired router, all ports forwarded through
FTP drive space: Maxtor 200 GB external drive(current)
Maxtor 120 GB internal drive(to be implemented)

Recommended solutions to problems with the FTP:

On my end, I've changed the user's password and sometimes rebooted
the computer in case something got into FileZilla. Sometimes it works
but don't have any idea why.

On the user's end I've recommended using the FileZilla client,
unintall/reinstall in case of corrupted software, reboot the computer,
forward ports on a router if behind one, use PASV settings, or different
ports.

To use PASV in FileZilla,

Click 'Edit'
Click 'Settings..' from the pulldown menu
Under the 'Connection' tree click 'Firewall settings'
Check the 'Passive Mode' box
Click 'OK'

I welcome ALL discussion or recommendations for solving these
headaches when they arise.

Thank You

If I were you, I would not use Filezilla's server, since I'm not sure if it's designed to support user load you might be having. In addition, I see you are using a beta version which means it's now being tried by developers. So I recommend something something more professional or at least use a stable version. Regards

Use another program for connecting to the FTP.
I have the same poblem, but IE connects to the server and open the list directories.

Please explain. What program do you use? How do you mean when IE connects to the server?

I get the same message as Dave the Rave.

Well, the Internet Explorer allways freezes when trying to connect on any FTP. Bulletproof and many others don´t connect also, but I´ve found that when using filezilla on active mode, the connection works fine.

I even connected several times after solving the mistery, but now, as I´m without internet conection, from more than an month, no conection for us, my precious...

I had a slight problem but that was fixed when I switched off something called "Z mode compression"... Filezilla doesn't seem to have that function. I'm using Cute FTP pro 7, with no problems.

Is it known how long it is going to be down for?
I had a couple books I wanted to upload, and one I was wanting to look for.
The death and decomposition book by Jay Dix, I belive that we used to have it on the library and I need it for my term paper on the effects of water on determining the time of death. (This class is ending up being weaker then I thought or I should say hoped it would be, but hey it is just a beginers course so I should not have hoped for too much, plus it is all still some good knowledge to have in my arsena.. I mean for just the point of knowing.

The FTP is working for me, but I have only been downloading not uploading. Also I am using CuteFTP home 7.1, not filezilla.

I have no idea if this is the right thread on the forum to post this message, so I am sorry if not and apologize for it.
I have the following situation: I downloaded the file "firearms blueprints1.zip" 3 times.
When I tried to open it with winzip it gives me the following error:

"Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try downloading the file again."

My experience on the subject is that the file is corrupted or damaged and that’s why I am getting the above message.
Can someone please replace the damaged file on the server

hrmmm. That is extremely odd, the ftp works fine through cute ftp, but dies through every configuration using Smartftp.

Oh well I will get on uploading some of the better, of the books I have been collecting in th last while.

Realy is odd though about SmartFTP
