Dear Friends,

SWIM searched our old pal google but all SWIM gets is sharewares which are trying to rip SWIM, without actually using the applications.

SWIM has purchased a DVD for SWIM's small kid, but since the SWIM's kid is small he shall surely ruin it. So SWIM cannot give it to him for playing. For this reason SWIM is trying to convert DVD into DivX VCD / or DVD. But DVD is copy protected, so ordinary copying software does not work.

So anybody knows a free DVD ripper which is capable of ripping the copy protected DVDs. Regards.

I use DVDshrink to make backups of my DVDs, I think it is able to deal with copyright protection.
However, my backups are all DVDs, not VCD's or Divx, so I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but I'm assuming a glance over their website will answer that question for you. http://www.dvdshrink.org/

EDIT : Aikon's post came up in between the time of me reading the thread and posting my response, Mods, please delete this post as it's kind of redundant now.

There will be no more upgrades for this software as the author has been threatened
by the DVD ripoff industry.

Ah...DVDshrink...that's the program I use, but I couldn't remember the name.

It works for almost every movie DVD I've put it to. The most recent exception, though, was 'Lord of War' (with Nicholes Cage). It didn't even exist as far as DVDshrink was concerned, since it didn't show it being in the drive.

Of course, no matter how much the bastards try blocking people from doing what they want with what they paid for, someone always finds a way around their DRM attempts. :p

One thing I've noticed about DVDshrink is that, in order to keep the video editable in Premier, you need to set the video for 'No compression'. Otherwise, it's uneditable, at least on my machine.

SWIM hails you all for the help.

And this DVD Shrink app seems to be working like a charm. The solutions SWIM has found was struggling a lot and ripping was taking several hours :). Regards

Glad you found that. On a related note however, since I know people do this, we will all download our favorite TV show or movie pre-release (checks on the status of X-Men 3 release by ZN 87%) and have the problem of just watching it on our computer. Well, there is another way.

There is a program called ConvertXtoDVD created by VSO, the same company that makes BlindWrite. This program will take any input file I have tried (XVID for the most part) and convert them seemlessly into DVD folders and Chapters that can also be burned in program.

It's definately worth getting if you download pre-releases or are just trying to archive your favorite TV Show. You can find it on Soft-Best.net along with its crack.

For those that don't venture into the land of Microsoft, you can rip the DVDs with MacTheRipper (search versiontracker.com) and shrink them with DVD2OneX.

MacTheRipper has been updated to counter the copy protection that was installed not long ago that prevents some of the older programs (can't remember the names) from ripping newer DVDs.
