It was AP not HMTD and it was made with H2SO4.

H2SO4 is just as good (if not better) than HCL.. you just got to give it a wash or two in a good amount of water after filtration. And the best thing about H2SO4 is that the reaction happens a lot faster (using a lot less acid) so you don't have to wait around all the time...

A lot faster and hot as hell. When you add H2SO4 (if conc.) the mix gets very hot very fast and it's hard to get it cold again. I have problems adding 30% HCl to the mix, if it's about 6 degrees the chanse is quite big that it goes over 10. The last times I've made AP I have cooled it to -5 degrees before adding the acid, this way you can add it a lot faster and it never gets near 10 degrees.

Just add the acid really slowly... I dream about using concn. H2SO4 and the temperature never gets above 5 celcius. It takes ages, but its not that much hassle.

Don't click the pictures, Right click on the red X, click on Properties, copy the URL of the picture, open a new web browser window and paste in the URL click GO! and there's the pictures.

Wow, look at all the typos in that old post:)

It's not entirely true, I still use H2SO4 as catalyst on occasion, but I dilute it first to around 30% with water and chill it in the fridge before adding to the H2O2/acetone. Biggest change I made was adding a neutralisation step using bicarbonate of soda, haven't had a problem since.

I think the problem was an unstable product, either because of acid resiude, getting a dimeric rather than trimeric product, or a combination of the two. The gentle heat of the lamp was probably the final trigger. In a way it could have been a lot worse, I could have been handling the dried, highly sensitive product when it decided to go off.

I was amazed that the RC transmitter that was just inches form the blast (visible in picture) was completely unharmed and still works to this day. I still "use" that desk too, I lopped it in half with a saw and kept the half with the drawers. Come to think of it, I've still got the chair too, you can't sit on it, I just throw things over the back of it:)

Anthony, Im real glad your unscathed by that accident. Also, im pretty shure your AP was dimeric, as I recon 50 grams tcap would have done more to that table.

There could be several reason's why it didn't work:

A) Your internet cache may be full
B) Your internet settings may be wrong
C) You could be running a program that stops images from a certain server
D) I could go on all day listing meaningless trash.

Please don't request/demand information/help, the only people that do seem to get banned.

if you heat a very small amount of AP on a piece of metal it will go bang. a VERY small amount. you will probaly be left with ringing ears. this happens because the AP melts first (increasing density and therefore VOD) then it is ignited on the bottom of it so it confines itself. the combo of these two things causes the extremely small amout to detonate.

When I made that post, Geoshities allowed outside linking to pictures on their servers, so it wasn't too bad.

I totally agree that it probably detonated rather than deflagerate because of the confinement provided by the lampshade.

The funny thing was that the book for one of my courses at college was on the chair partially under the desk and caught some of the explosively propelled debris. When it came to handing the books back in at the end of the year, some people's had bent up corners or the odd pen mark, mine was the only one with blast damage! :D
