View Full Version : nitrocellulose problems

So with the reintroduction of the WC, I'm assuming it's still the place for the occasional noob question. If not.... well then I'm probably not going to be here much longer :(

Having gone to lowes I noticed they wonderful bottles of 90% H2SO4. now having bought a 50lb bag of KNO3 and only having gone through about 15 lbs of it so far I decide to start nitrations beginning with nitrocellulose because I need the laquer.

fast forward..... everything is dissolving and nothing is nitrating.

I have tried the 1:1 2:1 1:2 of KNO3:H2SO4 and everything is just turning to slop....very NOx smelling slop and every time I base the solution or rather clump of shit to clean it up I'm realizing I should bubble the fumes through water so I don't have to deal with this and just have HNO3 (rather dilute albeit)

I'm slowly sprinkling the KNO3 into the H2SO4 and stirring the whole time, I've tried cold, hot, room temp, nothing. No change in results. after a while a thick layer of precipitate forms atop the solution (I'm assuming its K2SO4)

WTF:confused:

(i might be adding more to this post)
