By 9:00 PM EST, tomorrow FEBRUARY 27, 2008, the FTP server will be
shutdown for transition to new hardware. The ONLY job of this hardware will
be to service FTP requests. If all goes well, the server should be back up by
midnight.

It is important that all members complete their downloads/uploads by
9:00 PM because resuming downloads may be headache. Resuming an upload
is definitely a headache.

Wish me luck !

Thanks for all the time and effort you keep putting into hosting, maintaining and financing the FTP on a daily basis tmp!

We all take the FTP for granted but we are very fortunate as a community to have a person like you who is willing to make these sacrifices.

Good luck with the transition to the new hardware!

I thank all of you for heeding the notice but as it turns out the hardware I
wanted is out of stock at the moment. The fucking salespeople lied ! So,
I'll have to wait until another time to get the hardware I WANT. I'm sorry if
I've inconvenienced anybody in anyway. I'll let you know when I'm ready to
make the transition. It'll be a while, so press on !

The reasons for wanting transition are easy enough. I mentioned making the
new computer have that task ONLY. Don't get me wrong. The P4 it's running
on right now is hotter than a firecracker. It's a 3.8 GHz Hyperthreading
processor, so no lack of speed. Personally, I'll put my bitch up against most
dual-core machines made right now ! The point is that the FTP doesn't need
all that processor speed but video processing does. It's also part of the
reason I want to use 2 computers. Any decent modern machine can service
the FTP.

On a side note, I've noticed the upload rates on FileZilla being as high as
256 KB/sec. According to Comcast, my maximum upload speed should be
96 KB/sec. Interesting ! Now, I'll swear on a stack of Bibles that I haven't
used a script to "uncork" the modem's upload speed. Remember that I'm
talking kilobytes - not kilobits. I won't uncork the modem because I don't
want my service cut off for stealing bandwidth. IMHO, I think Comcast is
allowing the higher speeds because a competitor, Verizon, is installing their
very high speed FiOS systems although it hasn't been done in my area yet.
In short, I think Comcast is feeling the heat from their competitor and is
making a preemptive strike, so to speak, against Verizon. Better for us all the
way around since the biggest complaint we have is about the slow uploads.
