I searched the forum and didn't find much on 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (nitrotriazolone or NTO) including Mega's Lab section.

Here is a link for a .pdf that includes the synthesis, synthesis optimization, physical properties and other information. It includes the original LANL report, a SNPE report, several patents and an invention registration.

NTO is an alternative to TATB in that it is an insensitive explosive similar to TATB, but with more power and considerably easier to make.

This used to be on Megas old chemlabs, the name was there but the lab was empty if my memory serves me correctly. He plans on adding it soon, I mentioned this to him a short while ago in PM and he told me he was working on adding it.

I found this a little while ago its a patent on it http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4733610.html
I found NTO first mentioned here , a Ebook on the evaluation of FOX-7 and it was a comparative in there.

I than looked around on the interweb but that patent and a little snippet of information was all I could find in my little search.

Thanks for the post, plutobound.

One preparation of semicarbazide is listed near the end of the .pdf; essentially, urea + hydrazine ---> seimcarbazide. I'm sure, however, that you (the home hobbyist) should look up some other preps to get a good grasp of the procedure.

Lest you be discouraged, hydrazine is also an OTC prep.
