View Full Version : TMP's Official FTP Server Thread

This has been requested by Mega and for good reason. Newbies have been
PMing him about access to the FTP. Mega doesn't run the FTP - I do ! Mega
runs this Forum, is extremely busy maintaining it, and shouldn't be bothered
with FTP questions/requests. ALL requests for access and/or assistance are
to be PMed to me.

The Rules:

1) Do not upload music, porn, or videos. The exception is videos that are
politically oriented or technically related to our hobbies. While I enjoy music
and porn, there are potential legal issues that can create unwanted
attention by law enforcement. If I find them on the FTP, they will be
DELETED immediately !

2) The address for the FTP client is always: ftp://imgtf.no-ip.org
If this changes for any reason, I'll post the new address in this thread.
The FTP ports are always 21(FTP) and 80(HTTP). Port 80 was added
because of the rather nasty habit of public libraries blocking port 21. Other
ports will be opened in extraordinary circumstances.

3) Your username that you post or PM under will be your FTP username.
I'll assign a password to you. All usernames and passwords will be in
uppercase - CAPITAL letters to be more explicit.

4) Moderators and administrators will also be given a PRIVATE subdirectory
not accessible by anyone except the owner.

5) All uploads go into the UPLOAD or OTHER subdirectories. You can create
your own public folder in the UPLOAD subdirectory ONLY !

6) If you are banned from this Forum, even if temporarily, you will be
removed from FTP access until such time that the Forum moderators and/or
administrators determine that you can regain access. You must re-request
access in any event. Trust me, I look at the banned and BFL lists on a
regular basis.

Now, with the rules clearly stated, take the time and effort to upload when
possible to share with the community. I provide the hardware and bandwidth
for the FTP. On occasion I find some files that we can use. The real work is
done by your fellow Forumites who have spent many hours uploading,
sometimes even using that miserable dialup internet service, to provide all of
us with a wealth of information. To all those who have contributed to the
FTP, you deserve a round of applause !

Next thread item: FileZilla - why I like it and recommend it.

Of the FTP software available, FileZilla is the one I'm most familiar with. The
FTP server runs on FileZilla, therefore the client is the most compatible and I
highly recommend it. Bear in mind, that these instructions are from an older
post, and newer versions of the client probably exist. These instructions also
apply to the Windows XP SP 2 O/S platform.

DOWNLOAD FILEZILLA

1) Type www.sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla in your browser's address box.
2) Click the green bar that says "Download Filezilla"
3) Click the green "Download" tab for FileZilla 2.2.18
4) Click the file "FileZilla_2_2_18_setup.exe"
5) Click the blue "Download" box on the mirror closest to you.
6) If you're running Internet Explorer, a status bar may appear telling you it blocked
the download. If this happens, click on that bar and click "Download..." from the
popup menu that appears.
7) You should then be prompted if you want to run, save, or cancel. Click the "Save" button.
If something goes wrong during installation, you can rerun without downloading
again. You will prompted as to where to save the download. I recommend C:\,
the root directory on your hard drive as it will be easier to find the file.

INSTALL FILEZILLA

1) Click the "start" button, bottom-left corner of your screen.
2) Click "Run..." from the menu that appears.
3) Click the "Browse..." button.
4) Browse to the directory where you saved the downloaded file and click
"FileZilla_2_2_18_setup".
5) Click the "Open" button.
6) Click the "OK" button.
7) If you get a warning asking:
"Are you sure you want to run this software ?", click the "Run" button.
8) The license agreement will appear. Click the "I Agree" button.
9) Under "Choose Components" click the "Next" button.
10) Under "Choose Install Location" click the "Next" button.
11) Under "Choose Start Menu Folder" click the "Next" button.
12) Under "General settings" click the "Install" button.

RUN FILEZILLA

Connect to the FTP

1) Start FileZilla by whatever method is most comfortable to you.
2) I recommend maximizing the program window for an easier view of the program.
3) There are 4 boxes at the top for the connection information.
4) Enter "ftp://imgtf.no-ip.org" into the address box.
5) Enter your USERNAME and PASSWORD in the appropiate boxes.
6) For the port box enter either 21 or 80.
7) Click on the "Quickconnect" button.
8) In the status window immediately below a series of messages will appear.
The last one should read "Directory listing successful".
9) If the message "Unable to retrieve directory listing" appears there are some
steps that can be taken to reconnect.
9.1) Close FileZilla and restart.
9.2) Try a different port. If 21 doesn't work then use 80, or 21 if 80 doesn't work.
9.3) Sometimes passive mode is necessary to connect.
9.3.1) From the menu bar on top Click "Edit".
9.3.2) From the pulldown menu click "Settings...".
9.3.3) Under the "Connection" tree click "Firewall settings".
9.3.4) Click the checkbox for "Passive Mode".
9.3.5) Click the "OK" button.
9.4) Click the "Quickconnect" button.
9.5) Sometimes you have to try a combination of ports with or without Passive Mode to
properly connect.

Transfers

1) There are 2 windows below the status window:
1.1) On left is "Local Site:". This is YOUR computer and where you will upload from or
download to. It shows your directory structure, current directory in the box and a list
of subdirectories and files.
1.2) On right is "Remote Site:". This is the FTP and where you will upload to or download
from. Like the "Local Site:" it shows the current directory and a list of subdirectories
and files.
2) To upload a file to the FTP, scroll down the file list in the "Local Site:" to the file.
Place the mouse pointer on the file and RIGHT click. From the popup menu click on
"Upload".
3) To download a file to YOUR computer, scroll down the file list in the "Remote Site:"
to the file. Place the mouse pointer on the file and RIGHT click. From the popup menu
click on "Download".
4) In either case, the status of the transfer will be indicated in the bottom window
with a time indicator and a progress bar.
5) A note on directories in the "Remote Site:".
5.1) To go to the file list in a subdirectory on the FTP, double-click that subdirectory.
5.2) To back out of a subdirectory, scroll to the top of the file list and double-click the subdirectory that has no name but with 3 dots "..." appearing next to it.
6) When you're done click "File" on the top menu bar, then click "Exit" from the
pulldown menu.

Something I forgot to mention earlier: The connection limit per user is 2. The
only exception is for adminstrators/moderators - their connection limit is
unlimited. Connection speed limits are wide open for all users. It depends on
how many users are slicing up the bandwidth pie. The faster your download
speed, the faster you get information. The server isn't that busy during the
wee hours of the morning here on the U.S. East coast. This is probably your
best time for downloading as there are few users during those hours.

It seems that some members haven't read or chose to ignore this thread.
These are the people still attempting to use more than 2 connections. Always
remember that the connection limit, it applies to both the IP and username, is
always 2 unless you're a moderator or administrator.

I noticed that the last time I attempted to use firefox to download from it(I switched to a real FTP program). Been a while since I used the FTP much though.

Some of you may have noticed that the FTP is not online at the moment. It's
going through what looks to be a 3-4 hour backup. The original backup drive
was severely outdated so I deleted that backup copy. Before I did, it took a
few days to remove the damn duplicates ! About 60 GB worth. Another
reason to backup to a clean drive - no previous duplicates will be around. As
soon as the backup completes, I'll put the drive back online. Thank You for
your patience.

BTW, I will grant requests for new access after the drive is back online.

Tmp is aware of this but all of you who have used the FTP in the past (before he had a chance to deal with some of the malware, viruses and crap.....),there was a file: AR15cadFILES.zip that contained a fairly well written Trojan. So if you kept that file around (like I did) specifically to pump into a design program, scan it and pull out the *bb file as the Trojan was a script but if you ran any of the dwg files it'd now in the .exe's.... So it may have slipped in under your anti-virus program @ home, etc.

It -=IS=- worth looking into as the payload can be malicious. Mcafee should find it, Norton may not as it's pretty new and scripted. Spyware stuff like Spy Sweeper should find it. It's just that now all the newer shit is scripted in graphics to slip INTO the executable, instead of starting in the exe.

I noticed we are getting into design programs with Solidworks, etc and I remembered this issue (as I even wrote a little note to myself) to post this a few days back. If you have been using the FTP for a long while; check back on your old stuff. NO ONE can keep track of all the issues involved in running a FTP and that one is growing much larger now that it's getting some age to it.....

Some members have PMed me about connection problems. FileZilla can be
quirky as I've seen in the past but I still recommend its client software for
connection as it's still the most compatible with the FileZilla server.

So how do I go about finding out what password was assigned to me?

You need to ask tmp for an account. If you have done so, then you should receive an PM from tmp telling you your username and password. If you do not have a PM yet, wait a week or so and ask again.

Do not pester tmp because he may not have had time to create your account yet.

Thanks, I just wasn't sure if I was supposed to request on or not. It seemed like his post was there to keep people from asking him for accounts. I've been a member here for several months, but I don't post much...

Moderator Note:No, his post was to stop people asking Megalomania, the Admin of this site, for FTP access (if that is the post you were referring to)
