Now Iīm carrying a problem with me that donīt let me rest.
I donīt know how the deringer locks work.
The old sharps deringer (pepperbox) has four barrels and the newer double deringer 2 barrels but only one hammer.

How is it possible to fire round afer round with only one hammer but 2 or 4 barrels?

I'm not sure about this but I believe some derringers works like revolvers without triggers that they rotate the barrel with a simple camming action and when the hammer comes down it strikes the bullet.

Hope this helps.

Also would it be worth my while on writing a topic on useful hand gun conversions...

What typ of handgun conversions - blank to live fire? Brocock TAC to live fire? I'd be interested anyway.

and also the fake Ģ39.99 deringer conversions, plus air gun to live ammo conversions.
but many others can be included. this is the only sort of thing i can truly specialise in.

keep your eyes peeled for the topic. many gun conversions will not be posted, due to the fact that i live in enlgand and it is most probable that i can not locate certain items like many can in the united states.

Here is a pic of a double derringer.
You can see 2 solid barrels and a single hammer.
Does anyone have a cutoff drawing wich shows how the mechanik fires one barrel after the other?

Maybe it helps, pay attention to the itens 50 and 110, which are the
percursor and the alternator.

Lo all :)

I just posted an exploded diagram of a Remington Double Derringer to the FTP - its in the uploads directory - RemingtonnDerringer.gif - its only 52kb, But the actual size of the gif is too large for putting up here.
Im not sure how to go about linking pictures from the FTP, so if someone who knows how could post a link. Then everyone who dosent have access to the FTP can see it aswell.

Anyway - from looking at the picture, I think the postiion of the firing pin is adjusted by a rachet. It only needs two positions - top barrel and bottom barrel - I assume the fining pin would aim at one, then when next the pistol is cocked the firing pin is lifted to its new position by the ratchet.

But look at the picture and see if you agree or not.
For improvisation purposes Id say it would be better all round to fire both barrels at once. The design is simpler - and your twice as likley to hit what your aiming at :p

That - or I saw a picture of a prototype two shot "liberator" with a sliding breech. One chamber is exposed for loading/ejecting - the other is ready to go. I could probably find the picture if anyone is interested.
If you want an easy to make pistol, looking at the design of a "liberator" would be a good start

Oh - and the pepperbox you mentioned was the first (or one of) revolver - its 4 barrels rotate, not just the cylinder as in modern revolvers, Im not sure exactly but from memory I think it may have even been rotated by hand.

hope this was of some help.

Hallo all,
thanks for the interesting pics. But I had a problem to download it from the FTP. Only this pic gives me an error message wile loading.
Perhaps it is corrupted somehow.

Could you please send me the pic to maxim750k@compuserve.de

Jumala... There are different versions of derringers with an automatic barrel selection.
The picture on the ftp shows the classic remington double-derringer (over/under-derringer, patented ~1865)
with a moving firing pin.

Dave the Rave has posted a link to a picture of the modern version of a derringer (with 2 firing pins and a moving
striker (the selector) between the firing pins and the hammer).

Here is another exploded drawing of a modern derringer:
