I have a L1A1 compensator that I was wanting to put on my WASR-10. The only thing is that the wasr barrel is tapped all the way and the compensator is only tapped about 1/2 inch, leaving an untapped space between the threads and the bottom of the compensator. My question is, does the barrel need to sit all the way to the bottom of the compensator, or is it alright to have a 1/4 inch space between the barrel end and the bottom of the compensator

I'm not familiar with the L1A1 model number. What do you like about this model more than to buy another compensator that's fit correctly?

I can't see any reason why it would hurt to screw it on as is other than maybe cosmetically, assuming it's made for a rifle that chambers the same round as yours does. It probably won't engage the spring loaded pin in the base of the front sight post to keep it from backing off, so if you like it on there better than without it, you might just silver solder it there in place.

Alternatively, you could try to find a 14:1 reverse thread bottom tap (I did see them someplace, actually, but the site evades me now) and finish out the threads on your compensator that way. Mcmaster Carr would surely have them, but you'll pay a pretty penny for one there (much more than a new flash hider or recoil compensator, anyway).

Show us some pics. Of the compensator would be helpful, but I'm a sucker for gun-porn, so show us your WASR, too! :)

The L1A1 is the inch pattern FAL. I already had the compensator and didn't want to buy another and the bottom tap cost too much to use once.

Well, there ya go then.

Aside from some models working well to redirect muzzle flash to the side so you don't lose your sight picture so easily, they seem to do nothing much for recoil that I could tell. Some certainly look cooler than others, though.

If it were me, I'd stick a muzzlenut or a slant brake on there (so I could use a bayonet if needed) and call it done. But then all the AKMs I've ever fired were "working guns" so cosmetics never mattered one bit.

I would like to find an barrel nut for my M70AB2, do you know if a standard barrel nut from an AKM would work?
