I read in the HTH + Naptha that ammonium hydroxide + CaClO will give a white cloud - nbk says ammonium chloride maybe. How would I get this stuff as a solution or a solid?

To make ammonium chloride, buy ammonium sulfate fertilizer( it comes about 95% pure) and buy calcium chloride from tractor tire places where its used to fill tires with concentrated liquid as antifreeze. both are cheap.
Mix them in the balanced ratio to cause ammonium chloride and calcium sulfate.

The calcium sulfate is almost zero soluble so it ought precipitate out rapidly, leaving ammonium chloride in solution.

2Ca Cl2 + (NH4)2 SO4= 2NH4 Cl+ 2Ca SO4

2x164 132 2x 53 2x 136 wts

328 ozs chloride of lime with 132 ozs of ammonium sulfate and get 106 ozs of ammonium chloride in solution and 272 ozs of chalk precipitated.

A far easier is to mix household ammonia with hardware store hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid, used for cleaning pools). Add a small amount of acid to a large container of the ammonia, the acid is far more concentrated, and so less is needed. Add the acid carefully and slowly, with stirring. It will form white vapors that form deposits on the container and the surrounding objects. Some cooling may be needed as the reaction can get quite hot if done too fast.

After the reaction is done you will have a solution of the stuff in water. You can boil it down to precipitate the ammonium chloride crystals. If you add some acetone to the boiled down solution you can push out the crystals without having to boil to dryness. Ammonium chloride is insoluble in acetone, which in turn is soluble with water.

But obviously bulk ag. chemicals are going to be much cheaper if you plan on making more than just a few ounces.
