I read in KIPE 1 or 2 (can't remember which and I lost them both) that PIB is used in Bazooka Bubble Gum. I recently quit smoking and started chewing a lot of this gum to fill in the gap (nicorette is too expensive!). I buy it by the box of 25 for $1. Cheap. So I thought, is there a way to extract the PIB from the rest of the stuff? Also, yesterday I was researching stuff for use in HPR and I ran across this site, http://www.argonide.com/propellants.html it is very interesting. It mentioned "HTPB (hydroxy terminated polyisobutylene)". So I guess the two chemicals are closely related. Is there a way to change PIB into HTPB?

I have researched this a lot now and most call it "hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene" so something is fucked up. Sorry.

Hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is just an oridinary inert binder used in explosives and propellents. It is the industry standard for now, until energetic binders replace it.

The two substances are not really related at all, except that they are polymers. PIB is made from 2-methyl-1-propene, and HTPB is made from 1,3-butadiene.

Damn :o . Well thanks, now I know. Does anyone have a synthesis for HTPB? Thanks.
