View Full Version : How are permanganates made?

Im pretty interested in learning about 'exotic' explosives, and from what has been said here on the forum, ammonium permanganate seems to be one. I think this would be pretty easy, given one could obtain some Ca(MnO4)2. Thats a bit harder.

How are permanganates made? Could MnO2 be used for it? Maybe heating it with some calcium substance, or something similar.. ?

Hello all,

Potassium or Sodium Permanganate is made by heating together MnO2, KOH or NaOH, and KCLO3. Another way, without the Chlorate is just heat the MnO2 and Hydroxide to form Potassium or Sodium Manganate then pass in CO2/CL2/or Ozone (used to oxidize the Manganate) to a hot solution of either to from a solution of Permanganate. That's all I have, but I think it should work for Calcium also!

Interesting. What happens to the H, does it combine with Cl and fly off, or.. ? Could nitrate be substituted for the chlorate, or not?
