What are exactly the toxic effects of NO2.

On contact with water, it will form HNO3. Go figure...

Being a newbie he may not get the sarcasm. http://theforum.virtualave.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

To clarify, NOx form nitric acid on contact with water. Your lung tissues are mostly water. Nitric acid is highly corrosive. Lung tissue doesn't like highly corrosive chemicals dissolving it to mush.

Mushy lung tissue doesn't work. Lungs don't work, you don't breath. If you can't breath, you die.

I may be relatively new here but I do have a basic understanding of chemistry. I posted once if it was possible to use the gasses formed in nitrations, could be used to make nitric acid. And I already figured out that it would be corrosive to your lungs. But after inhaling some white smoke in the step of making nitric acid by adding kno3 to h2so4, my hands started shaking tremedously. So I thought about other side effects beside tissue dammage(like Cl2 gas). But thanks for your understanding.

P.S. when The wind blew in my reaction vessel a lot of smoke (gas) formed, but otherwise the reaction was rather subdued.
P.S.1 If it was a white gas could it be another NOx

The "white gas" is HNO3 vapour.

Apparently not as dangerous as NO2 but still pretty unpleasant to inhale.

The NO2 is toxic and dangerous, but it is not as toxic as HCN for example. It is realatively toxic. I have inhaled some vapours and nothing happened but if you breathe too much you will suffer a lot and may die. The strange thing here is that the effect of the NO2 inhaled is shown after some time up to 72 hours, before the sympthoms brake up, it has done lots of demmage!

The strange thing inside was C-4...

but why is the reactionrate increased when the wind blows in the vessel

i don't think the reaction is speeding up but the EVAPOURATION rate is. the wind blows giving the liquid surface more energy resulting in a greater evapouration rate. kinda like when wet cloths dry easier on a windy day.

Logical that I didn't come up with that thanks guys
